Surtr

Surtr strides across the smoking beach of Gaul’s eastern shore, his underfoot lava-grass hissing in protest. His height towers over an ogre’s, his skin dark as slag, veins of glowing red tracing like molten rivers beneath rock. He grips a hammer so vast it rests on both shoulders, its head forged from brimstone and cracked volcano bone, chained with black-iron links that clink like distant thunder.   Brought across ocean from Kragmaw’s molten forges during the Hearthic Invasion, Surtr’s first strike shattered the outer gate of Blackstock, his hammer crashing so hard the walls shook and men’s shields bent like copper. The Bone Ogres cheered behind him; the Gaulan lines reeled. He did not wear a war-banner—his being was the banner.   In the lava-choked passes of Kragmaw he is lord, but on the mainland he is dread incarnate. Villagers south of the plains whisper of the “Fire-giant’s night,” when he walks again and the smell of brimstone fills the wind.
