He paid off his debts by reading the shuffle better than any opponent. When he joined the High Guard, those debts were buried—but the lessons stayed.   On the field he fights not by sheer strength, but by timing. He passes his blade when the enemy breathes; he holds his shield when the foe hesitates. In council he advises the captains quietly, calculating positions, suggesting formation shifts the way a gambler predicts the next card.
