John Korbin
John Korbin spends most days perched on a stool at the edge of Turin’s worn docks, his old fishing lines bundled neatly beside him. His legs failed him years ago after a bad fall on a storm-torn deck, but he never let that stop him from heading out onto the water in a small, steady skiff. The catches aren’t large, yet they’ve kept his daughter Dawn fed, and keep his hands busy enough to stave off the kind of restlessness that sinks men his age.
Finn, the neighborhood orphan John took in when the boy’s father disappeared, grew into the only real help John ever accepted. Finn carried nets when John couldn’t, mended planks on the old boat, and eventually kept the family business alive while John healed as best he could. Now John watches from the shore as Finn and Dawn prepare for their life together. He grumbles about getting old, but there’s a quiet pride in him when he sees Finn cast the nets exactly the way he taught him.
