The Floating Isle
A Floating Prison
Back during the Era of Creation, the deities of the world fought constantly with the darker powers of the world, seeking to protect the new life from the poisonous shadows. The most prominent of these dark forces was Brantis, the father of Althea. The Abyss. It swallowed anything it could reach, removing whole stars from existence with only a snap of its jaws.
After five hundred years of this battle, the deities of the world eventually came together and hatched a plan to trap the Abyss somewhere, where it could no longer threaten their creations. And so they trapped Brantis with magical chains deep within a labyrinth of their construction, and hurled it into the sky so that the Abyss was far from mortal eyes. There, Iva put a powerful enchantment on the prison. It would remain suspended in the sky for eternity. To keep this floating prison safe from the other dark powers, it would vanish from the mortal plane for centuries. Every few hundred years, however, the island must reappear so that the spell on the chains can be reinforced and the deities could ensure that the Abyss could not return.
While the island was vanished, all of its contents would be held in suspended animation, allowing the guardians placed there by the deities to remain in near-perfect condition for as long as possible.
