Feral Necrosis

Colloquially called zombies, victims of the Revenant Virus are actually fully alive. However, they exist in a torturous state of balanced regeneration and necrosis, living out eternity as violent husks of their former biology.   Feral Necrosis infectees exhibit incredible regeneration, to the extent that severed limbs and even puddles of blood in strong enough mana fields are capable of total regeneration. Dead bodies are not immune to infection. Reanimation is one of the hallmarks of this disease.   The disease is incredibly contagious, as the virus is a blood borne pathogen and victims of the disease are relentless in their bloodlust.

Transmission & Vectors

Blood borne pathogen spread by the mixing of bodily fluids with an infected individual. Most commonly the result of injuries sustained by combat with infected individuals.

Causes

This disease is caused by infection with the Revenant Virus.

Symptoms

This disease manifests itself as rampant regeneration as per the Cure Light Wounds spell. After approximately a day's time, the virus has propagated enough to reanimate the body of a dead creature. At this point, the body's immune system activates and attempts to destroy all tissue infected with the Revenant Virus. This leads to an equilibrium state between the necrosis of the body balanced against the regenerative power of Cure Light Wounds.   Once the disease has reached its fullest progression, the following symptoms are observed.   Regeneration: Bodies infected with the Revenant Virus are incredibly resilient, regenerating as if permanently under the effects of Cure Light Wounds. About a liter of blood is regenerated per hour, which inevitably leaks out of its open wounds. The result is that a nearly endless stream of blood trails behind the creature, covering everything in pathogenic liquid.   Decay: parts of the creature's body are constantly rotting, necrotizing, and sloughing off of the creature's body. The miasma of rotten flesh is everpresent, and entire limbs may sometimes detach from the creature. Should this occur, note that the presence of the virus in the detached part gives it the potential to reanimate and regenerate just like the host creature itself. In areas with a strong enough mana field, as little as a pool of infected blood has been observed to act as a sufficient substrate for total regeneration. The strength of the local mana field acts as as a limiter on the amount of bodies generated in this way.

Treatment

Similar to most other Arcanoviruses, the only known treatment for the disease is to eradicate the virus itself in a suitable anti-magic field.

Prognosis

Infection with Feral Necrosis is essentially a "death" sentence without access to an anti-magic field.

Sequela

The intense pain of whole-body necrosis and tumor growth coupled with the disease's necrotic effects acting on brain matter leave the victim incapable of anything other than reflex-driven fight-or-flight responses. Victims of this disease are aggressive, and will attack almost anything vaguely threatening on sight. On some occasions simply moving slowly and smoothly has been observed to be enough to avoid triggering their ire.   Usually other infected individuals move too slowly to trigger each other's aggression. However on occasions they have been known to engage in large-scale violence against each other.
