The OmniWar
The OmniWar were a series of global & extraplanar divine conflicts that raged from approximately 100 BDC to 0 BC/AC, the marking of the Mortal Age.
Prelude: The Divine Age
Geopolitical Landscape
Dalterra
The continent of Dalterra was ruled by the Solternian Empire, Dahli's divine empire. Dahli's Minor God children were charged to rule Dahlaeyir, her Divine City, as its capital. Dahli created many demigods among her Sun Elves, the dominant racial class, to prove their power & worth to her. Only upon a feat of true divine power will they be able to ascend to godhood and take the Solternian throne, with or without her direct power. Wood Elves were treated as second-class citizens in the Solternian Empire, but maintained their woodland kingdoms & nations under Solternian rule despite racial tensions with Sun Elf citizens. Syna, Wood Elf Goddess of Forests, Happiness & Freedom shares domain over the Wood Elf nations with Jaga, Wood Elf God of Jungles & Hunting, and Morgura, Bog Elf Goddess of Swamps & Sadness. Gnomes were treated as third-class citizens or slaves to the Solternian Empire. Societies were steeped in highly advanced arcane & divine magitech, and the Solternian Sun Elves were considered to be the greatest arcane mages of all time. Dahlaeyir was the largest and most powerful and most magitechnologically advanced Divine City of all time. During this era, Solternians promulgated the claim that the elves created/developed Arcane magic, which is further evidenced by the high presence of it within their lands (and is also true).
During the Divine Age, the borders between Gaion, the Five Realms & the Weave of Reality was thin. Solternian mages created highly advanced spells and tested the boundaries of magic in ways not seen on Gaion since. Fey spirits resembling different beasts (elephants, rabbits, cats, lions, scorpions, owls, etc.) were pulled from Aurofey and fused into gnome & Wood Elf test subjects to create animal-based humanoids (loxodon, harengon, tabaxi, owlin, etc.). Mages & druids performed advanced, lost-to-time experiments of arcane & perverted Druidic magic to create these artificial life forms.
The Drakewatch served as a bastion of divine protection from forces that threaten the continental borders. The Knights of the Drakewatch were paladins/clerics of Dahli's Pantheon, Solternian Gaioforce sorcerers/martials and Solternian Sentinel Droids, asserting the empire's control of the continent. Much of their presence was in Western Dahlterra, the region closest to Vulsemar. Tensions rose when a scourge of undeath was looming in the north, along with Orcish naval presence in the eastern oceans putting pressure on the Solternian Navy. The Solternian Army was the most magitechnologically advanced fighting force in the age, armed with arcane, divine & Goultani magic-users & magitech alike.
Hythenos
In the early days post-Gigadragonomy, the humans warred with the dwarves in the True Man's War. The humans used their stronger Goultani connection to narrowly edge out victories against the dwarves armed with Rune Magic, pushing them west of the Quar'thek Mountains extending throughout Southwest Hythenos. However, the mountains gave the dwarves a highly defensiveble front to hold humankind back indefinitely, allowing them to focus on strengthening Dolgamarth, their last surviving stronghold. In the climatic Battle of Peak's Hold, King Dolgar (first of his name, founding hero of Dolgamarth, & demigod son of T'Nar), used a since-unseen display of Runic & Goultani magic to hold the line against Hytheron himself, famously maintaining a stalemate for several months against the god atop the northernmost peak of the Quar'thek Mountains. Hytheron eventually beheaded the king as a display of force in front of all his men & the King's, but it backfired. Instead, this divine show of unrelenting resistance/power against an overwheliming force served as Dolgar's act of ascension, turning his blood into infectious gold ichor that sprayed across the mountains with Hytheron's sword strike. The power of Hytheron's storm & wind also sprayed Dolgar's blood into the atmosphere to rain amongst the entire continent southwest of the Quar'thek Mountains. This enriched the land with Goultani-rich ore, forever granted luck in mining for the region, and created Dwarven Gold by spreading the magic into surrounding ore & rock. The dwarves used this newfound momentum to drive back Hytheron & the humans indefinitely, as their mountains had become magically rich & defensible. With the True Man's War concluded, the dwarves established the Dolgaran Empire in the name of their fallen king, worshipping him as their god & gaining undisturbed access to the rich mines of their region. The humans still controlled the Goultani-rich ore of the Navitos Rift (Hythenosian crashsite of the Goultani Gaiostone) & surrounding mountains.
While the dwarves of the early Dolgaran Empire expanded their understanding of magic & the Gaioforce in the post-Gigadragonomy world, the humans of Hytheron's divine empire ruled the rest of the continent. The empire enslaved "lesser beings", meaning the dwarves & halflings trapped on the north/norheast side of the Quar'thek Mountains after the war. Humans acquired knowledge of arcane magic in encounters or dealings with the elves of Southern Dalterra, or while studying the ruins of dwarven societies that were destroyed/conquered by the dragons, giants, or them. Over time, through this & their Goultani mastery, the humans used their dwarven slave population to ramp up their mining for Goultani-rich ore, building a vast magitech imperial war machine & constructing Hytheron's divine city, Hythopolis, out of the mountains, ore & stone from the Navitos Rift. Dwarves learned to use the Goultani Gaioforce in inspiration from/tandem with their Rune Magic, which added to their advanced understanding of magic & magitech. Dwarves also dug deep into the ground and created a vast network of tunnels & settlements underground, covering Hythenosian territory that would fall under Hytheron's control above ground. Dolgar ruled his empire from the seat of power in Dolgamarsh, siring seven demigod children who would later ascend as Minor Gods of different crafts & runic magic. The Hytherian Empire & Dolgaran Empire coexisted in a hostile cold war with each other for centuries, which served as the main conflict of the Hythenosian Theatre of the Elder Wars.
Cyregnor
teeming with highly advanced Frost Elf societies, ruled by the Cyrfrost Empire with Cyrofel as its capital. They were steeped in mass teleportation magitech, powerful cold magic/weapons, and necromancy.
Thagoron
Orc & Hobgoblin kingdoms reign. Divine City: Tha'kar.
Vulsemar
Constant wars between the dragons of Northern Vuslemar & the giants of Southern Vulsemar. These concluded during the Elder Wars, where the dragons decisively wiped out the giants of Southern Vulsemar and permanently crippled their world population & geopolitical status.
Aikanos (the sea)
Each distinct ocean was ruled by one of Akana's children, representing different seafolk races. Divine City: Akantis
The Elder Wars
Beginning
The Elder Wars started when Aurovi & Denothis fought in the cosmos above Gaion. T'Nar remained neutral in the conflict. Denothis wanted to use the full force of the gods to spread his essence (void) throughout the cosmos, corrupting whichever deities didn't comply. Aurovi, wishing to preserve life and end Denothis' corruption, stood in the way. The battle was visible from all the realms. Mortals on Gaion watched with awe, terror, uncertainty, and a wide array of feelings. Amongst the Skies of Hytheria (known as Caelysia at the time ), tensions between the Pantheons of the Sky (Hytheron) & Sun (Dahli) rose as the battle raged over their fate. In the Aurovian Wilds, the Pantheon of Earth (Gar'gomaut) awaited neither's victory, but prepared to lay undisputed domain over Gaion's continents while whichever victor is weak. In the Ominoid Realm, the Pantheon of Sea (Akana) await neither's victory, but prepared to rise from the seas of Gaion and flood the continents, opposite of Gar'gomaut. Meanwhile, the Pantheons of Chaos (Thatos) & Darkness (Cyr) awaited Denothis' victory, ready to spread their domains throughout the cosmos.
However, both Elder Gods were evenly matched, and in a cosmic explosion, destroyed each other in the battle's climax. The detonation spread through the entire solar system, infusing the Elder Gods' magicks into the realms and signaling one thing: war. The Pantheons of Chaos & Darkness took to raiding the mortal realm with their fiendish armies as penance for their lost opportunities. In tandem, their deepest worshipping continents (Thagoria & Cyregnor) rose up in a crusade of evil, spreading the will of their dark gods against Dalterra & Hythenos. The seafolk kingdoms rose in the will of their oceanic gods, meeting emboldened giants scattered across the world crusading for their own deities. Thagoria's various armies focused their efforts on Hythenos & Southern Dalterra, while Cyregnor focused on Northern Dalterra & Northern Vulsemar. The giants used their powers to transmute water to land all throughout the seas, leading the seafolk to counter with their opposing transmutations (this is why many giants live on islands throughout Gaion).
Meanwhile, the wars for Caelysia finally began. While Hythenos & Dalterra mainly warred with Thagoria & Cyregnor, respectively, the situation of their Pantheons' respective plane was different. The celestial armies of the Sky & Sun fought hard for control of the realm.
By the end, the war saw the rise and fall of multiple world superpowers and massive losses of life across the planet. It also marked the end of the Divine Era, the formation of the Astral Gate, and became known as the bloodiest, largest-scale, and most defining conflict in Gaion's history.
Hytheron & Dahli’s pantheons fought each other for control over Hytheria (unnamed by that point), Hytheron fought Thatos for control over Hythenos, and Dahli fought Cyr & Hytheron for control over Dahlterra.
When the Divine Accords were proposed, Cyr & Akana both signed for themselves and their pantheons. Hytheron, Dahli & Thatos did not. Hytheron & Thatos continued to fight for their chosen domains in the final campaigns of the war, while Dahli chose to leave Gaion entirely. She took all of her currently loyal pantheon & worthy followers, while leaving her other children & less-worthy followers behind.
The Cleansing
At the end of the Divine Wars, the Ascension Gods & their pantheons were ordered by T'Nar to sign the Divine Treaty, a magically binding document that forbades the gods from fully entering the mortal realm or sending their avatars to it. They also cannot directly interfere in the large-scale affairs of mortal societies. Those that refused (Thatos, Hytheron & a few gods in their pantheons) were demoted from divinty to their pre-Ascension demigod forms by T'Nar's time curse. This show of force coerced almost all the other gods into signing; Dahli, instead of signing, abandoned Gaion with her angels/celestial followers and a rapture of her most devout/useful mortal followers in the Solternian Empire. However, before the gods signed, many of them sundered the empires they ruled on Gaion with a final show of divine destruction unique to each deity. This event is known throughout history as The Cleansing, the official end to the Divine Era & the Divine Wars. The gods sundered their empires in spite, not wanting the magic & technological advances their empires made under their watch to remain in the hands of "undeserving" mortals. As such, most of the magitechnological advancements & research of that era have been lost, with only a few significant mortal societies from that time remaining on the planet. Ironically, Solternia was not sundered by Dahli's pantheon (who had mostly broken off to their own domains after their mother's departure), but rather by the vengeful societies it had oppressed during Dalhi's reign.
canon
Thatos & Hytheron fought each other persistently, neither able to finish off the other (symbolic of the war between Orcs & Humans). Their final battle split the supercontinent of Aenar into Hythenos & Dalterra, as well as launching Hytheron & Thatos to the Dongard Mountains & Sanhi Desert, respectively. While they lied on the ground, temporarily exhausted of power, T’Nar appeared, knowing that the Divine War will never end due to the actions of his brothers, and these two will recover and continue to fight for eternity if nothing was done. To test their power and delay the destruction their war would wrought, he uses his unchallenged temporal power to revert their bodies back to their pre-ascension mortal forms. This reverted them to their demigod strength, speed, durability, stamina & Gaioforce powers, but retained their divine intelligence, memory & immortal longevity (cannot die of old age, but can be killed or injured by a powerful opponent). He cast Hytheron & Thatos out to Northern and Southern Vulsemar, respectively, then left Gaion to explore and catalog the rest of the universe.
By the end of the war, Akana & Cyr were the only Ascension Gods roaming free on Gaion. Instead of T’Nar creating the new realms for these gods to inhabit, he instead diverts the blast from his brothers to splinter the old realms into fragmented dimensional planes, unstable but survivable for various forms of supernatural life/anti-life. The realms will be the same as what I’ve already written, just without Cyr’s frost realm or Volsengard. Cyr takes over the Underworld and Akana takes the Ominoid Seas (oceanic but mainly dark matter), while Thatos’ & Hytheron’s descendants take over the Thugoran Chaos (infernal but mainly antimatter) & Skies of Hytheria. The Aurovian Wilds remained a largely untamed realm, inhabited by many of Dahli’s descendants.
The Conflict
Outcome
- Devastation in the mortal realm; incalculable losses of life, civilization, & biodiversity.
- Death of Gar'gomaut
- Deaths of several Minor Gods
- T'Nar drafts the Divine Accords
- Akana, Cyr & their pantheons sign the Divine Accords
- Hytheron & Thatos refuse to sign the Divine Accords, subjecting them both to T'Nar's Descension Curse.
- Most Minor Gods within Hytheron & Thatos' pantheons sign the accords, seeing what happened to their rulers for defiance and seeking a chance to rule themselves
- Dahli refuses to sign the Divine Accords, leaving Gaion to explore the cosmos. Some Minor Gods in her pantheon join her, along with her remaining angelic followers. She raptured her most dedicated worshippers from the Solternian Empire into her ranks, taking them all to space while abandoning the rest of Solternia to its vengeaful enemies.
- The remainding members of Dahli's Pantheon disassociate from her and sign the accords, roaming the Aurovian Wilds & Skies of Hytheria without seeking direct power/competition with other deities.
Aftermath
- The Astral Gate (the border between the Ethereal Plane and the Astral Fog) keeps all divine beings from crossing into the mortal plane.
- Recontextualization of the Angel to a human form, rather than the elven forms associated with Dahli. A vast majority of elven angels serving Dahli's Pantheon were killed during the Celestial campaigns of the war.
