Mawr
Mawr (M-ow-ar)
A strange fey that appears as a fox. Though quiet and unfriendly, Mawr is an often helpful force for those lost deep in the woods, or those navigating the outskirts of the Feygold. He has a strange and quite powerful connection to lightning, and too holly trees, and is one of the Morrigan's many friends, in her guise as Grandmother Harrigan.
Almost always looks like a silver fox, though somtimes is entirely black, he always seems to have a rather thin coat, and a bushy tail. Large for a red fox, and longer limbed than is usual, with small light paws. When he is not working towards his or Grandmother Harrigan's inscrutable aims, he tends to tease hunters and interfere with fox hunts.
Mawr can turn into a dark-haired, wild looking man when he chooses, but rarely does so.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Large for a fox, with a bushy tail and a permanent thin summer coat. Grey eyes, and a tendency to make everyone feel as though he's staring directly at them. Lanky with light and swift steps and a twitchy bearing.
Identifying Characteristics
The permanently brushy tail, grey eyes and larger than average feet are the only way to differentiate Mawr from any other silver-fox, at least until he starts to speak.
Special abilities
Mawr can conjure lightning, and when there is a storm overhead he can direct where the bolts land. At considerable cost to himself, he can call down a lightning storm of his own for a few minutes.
He can also speak and enunciate clearly despite his mouth and tongue being poorly shaped to do so.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
No one knows Mawr's history, and he isn't telling. Most likely, he's been doing exactly what he 's doing now, roaming the world cavorting with fey and fox, and teasing hunters.
Sexuality
Mawr cavorts with who or whatever he finds attractive.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Mawr has participated in quiet a few impressive feats in the service of the Morrigan, though he's tight lipped about most. His greatest was his role in putting Winter-Entombed back to sleep. See Pink and Gold and the ancient and old for more details.
Intellectual Characteristics
Mawr is inquisitive, though prefers not to show it, and generally takes his time to approach anything new he encounters. Often, unless pressed or unless it is urgent, it will take days of testing, observing and stalking before Mawr will approach something of interest.
Mawr is quite respectful of those that he sees as more expert or advanced in his fields, but tends to be very dismissive of anyone who has dedicated their life to things he deems unimportant, believing them to be wasting their time.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
I have a duty to the courts of the feywild and too the wild places under my protection, otherwise my whims shall be my conscience.
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Mawr is excellent and not being seen when he doesn't want to be, and is remarkably hard to track when he wants to be. He's an excellent hunter, literally supernaturally good at navigating rough terrain. He's even an good climber, at least for a canine. He constantly gather knowledge about the plants and animals around him, and can recite near word for word anything he's learned. He also has working knowledge of the fairy courts, and the basics of courtesy and offense in the world of the fey. Mawr is actually pretty happy to work under someone better at organising things than him, or with better knowledge about particular situation.
Unfortunately, this is nearly the entire breadth of Mawr's knowledge. He has practically no knowledge about anything else. Towns and military fortifications confuse him, cities baffle him. Tactics, construction and diplomacy are all things for other people to worry about. He's not stupid, but is unwilling to learn about the majority of these (although he's dipping his toe into urban foxdom), as he simply sees them as unnecessary to know, and doesn't pay attention when they're explained.
Likes & Dislikes
Mawr can be won over with his favourite foods, holly berries, crustaceans and the livers of powerful creatures. Otherwise, he enjoys the winter, moonlight and irritating fox hunts. Mawr particularly dislikes salted meats, being petted and gifts that he has to carry. He claims to like cats, but in truth he mostly likes them for their flavour.
Mawr hates beagles, but is ambivalent to other hunting dogs. When a fox-hunt enters his territory he is generally antagonistic, acting as the ideal prey while others escape. Otherwise, he's generally curious towards the mortal races, but usually avoids interaction unless something particularly strange perks his interest.
Virtues & Personality perks
Mawr is loyal and to his few friends, and is, as much as any fey can be, kind. He is particularly defensive of those being pursued by a more dangerous enemy, and has come to the defence of escaping prisoners or fleeing refugees when their pursuers catch up too them. He's not much of one for holding grudges, but he has a long memory.
Mawr is humble, and well aware of his place in the world. He respects those above him in the fey courts, and respects those that have more knowledge and skill in places he thinks matters.
Vices & Personality flaws
Very unfriendly. Mawr might be helping you, but you'll rarely see him, and he is not shy about showing his dislike about people, and comments on personal things very offhandedly. He also has difficulty respecting anyone who is good at things he thinks don't matter. You could be the finest architect in the world, or an emperor, but unless you can tell which way a rabbit is running from its tracks, find game trails, navigate or move quietly, he doesn't really care.
Hygiene
Mawr keeps himself very clean, and appreciates the opportunity to clean his teeth. Mawr, unlike a real fox, has no burrow and roves constantly so is unused to needing to put effort into keeping a place clean.
Social
Contacts & Relations
Mawr has few close friends, and holds no loyalties to any other than those. Like many fey, he obeys "the rules" of engagement with the mortal realms to avoid the wrath of the seelie and unseelie courts. He has a few mortals he takes interest in, but rarely seeks them out. If they show up, he'll be glad to see them.
Mawr is frequently in the service of the Morrigan, and although they occasionally clash, he does genuinely like and respect her. He sees her as exemplary in what he and any fey like him should be, and appreciates that association with him means that courtiers and other fey leave him out of their political games.
Mannerisms
Mawr is blunt, rude and very personal with his insults and comments. His ears twitch when he's unsure or curious, and when nervous or anxious he paces.
Speech
His mouth doesn't seem to move when he speaks, and the voice seems to emanate from somewhere behind his body. His accent is difficult to place, and he tries his best to shape it too whoever he is speaking too.
