Essence Metamaterials

Essence Metamaterials are materials not found in nature which are created using Essence. These materials can have strange properties and are often highly unstable, only staying in existence due to being supplied with essence or energy.

Liqualight

Also known as Softlight. Liqualight is a metamaterial with niche applications, as it is a highly energetic liquid that requires a large amount of power to not fade out of existence immediately. It is also not influenced by gravity and even though it glows in the visible spectrum it also absorbs energy to feed itself. Given too much energy it will overload though and also disappear. It is created when highly energetic essence particles become loosely connected to each other by energy currents flowing between them. Due to not forming any molecules like in hardlight or crystalight, the resulting substance is a liquid with high surface tension that has a pleasant warm glow to itself. If the surface tensions if broken though part of the material will evaporate into heat and light before surface tension is restored again. It is used heavily in shields as its properties allow it to easily absorb energy from projectiles. Another special property of liqualight is that it becomes harder in response to physical trauma which also allows it to be of some use against physical projectiles. Even at peak hardness though it can't stop a bullet as it only acts as a very thick liquid and never comes close to feeling solid. This also allows a person to simply walk through a wall of Liqualight without much effort, while a running person would have a much harder time. Unlike hardlight, it will only ever emit safe levels of both heat and light and cant be used in offensive weaponry.

Hardlight

Hardlight is the most well known and easiest to create metamaterial. It gets its name from its appearance, as it is transparent and has a soft, warm glow to it. It was first created and is mostly used in its hard, crystalline form. It is created when essence particles get further connected to form molecules of varying size and length to form hardlight. The bond is only temporary though as no fundamental force keeps these molecules together, only the essence provided. Depending on what was used to create the hardlight its color can vary and it will take on the color of whatever essence was used to create it. There are also machines that create hardlight from energy, which is usually colored yellow since these machines usually make the easy conversion from electrical energy to yellow essence. There is also a great amount of variance to the properties of hardlight as it can a soft malleable material or as hard as metal or burning hot. In its harder forms, the hardlight molecules form crystal structures and harder versions are also much more brittle. This causes things like hardlight barriers to fall apart completely once broken. Hardlight relies on a steady supply of energy without which it quickly starts to break apart, releasing a stronger glow while the molecules fall apart and losing large scale crystalline structures.

Crystalight

Crystalight is another metamaterial created from essence, very similar to hardlight. Unlike hardlight though, crystalight only comes in one form, a solid glass-like crystalline material. Many consider it just another form of hardlight, but unlike hardlight, it does not require a constant supply of fresh energy and instead preserves its initial structure without a need to recharge. During its creation essence, itself is compressed fusing with atoms present or creating them to form the crystalight molecules. The more essence is used in this process the tighter the bond between the molecules and the stronger the material. While charged with essence it will glow in its color, otherwise, it will be transparent and looks like ordinary glass. Unlike hardlight, crystalight is also able to store essence within itself and depending on how it is made it can also repair damages to itself using the stored essence. This also means that uncharged crystalight can easily store essence within itself. After its initial creation it will never be any harder or weaker than when it was first created and can only store a certain amount of essence, dependent on its hardness. The highest grade of crystalight is found in godstones which are made almost entirely out of a crystalight so hard that almost nothing in the universe can as much as put a scratch in it and is also self-healing. More common uses of crystalight are soulstones which are made from various grades of crystalight or simple focus crystals made from lowest grade crystalight. Even the lowest grades can store an impressive amount of essence though and can be easily abused to create grenades by using non-self-healing crystalight filled to the brim with essence. When drained of all essence or when created to not self-heal, the crystalight will break apart when its surface is cracked, turning to dust almost instantly and releasing any leftover energy. If the damage is significant enough even self-healing crystalight will often break completely instead of healing.
