Cultural Malaise: Canada

The author of this article believes in the Gender Binary, so will be biased against the idea of a Gender Spectrum. They also don’t like Justin Trudeau but does’t mind Donald Trump
The Cultural Malaise reached Canada in 2016 from The States. However, the Federal Election of 2015 created Canada’s own Cultural Malaise. This spread widely before the Cultural Malaise of The Great Rewind also came across the border.

2015

Federal Election

Seat gains in the 2015 election from the Conservatives and the NDP spelt a majority under Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party [1][Image Reference][2][Image Reference], taking it from the conservatives. As the political party changed, so did the person running the country. The political makeup of the cabinet also changed to become “more diverse” as it was 2015[1][1a].

2016

2016 - Bill C16

This did not bode well, as the following year some unfortunate events occurred. One of these was the introduction of Bill C16 [2]. This put into law an idea from universities that there are more genders than the two that were previously known and well documented. The law, C16 [2], put into law that if someone identified as the opposite sex or another of the growing numbers of genders, other people have to use the right pronouns. This leaves some logical holes, such as one person who has differing pronouns day on day or doesn’t display their new gender identity, for example by growing their hair to look more effeminate. If someone does not recognise the gender of another person and uses the wrong pronouns, is that enough for someone to break the law? These debates continued. This Cultural Malaise spread to each province [2][Image Reference].

2016 - The US elections

In November 2016, the US elections occurred and Donald Trump became president. Those on the left politically hated Trump for reasons that broke apart when questioned. As this opinion was shared in Canada, the cultural malaise spread north. At this point, the Cultural Malaise from The States took over in Canada easily and took large chunks out of Canadian Life, accelerating their version of the Cultural Malaise. It is not clear what would have happened if the election results had allowed Steven Harper to take a fourth term [3] that would have made a difference. It has been surmised that if Canadian Cultural Malaise had not happened under Harper, The Cultural Malaise from The States would either not have taken so much of a bite out of Canada or would have skipped Canada entirely and instead go directly to Continental Europe.

2018

2018 - Peoplekind

Following on from the gender identity controversy, Justin Trudeau replaced parts of words that had the word “man” in them with “people” to make it more inclusive. An example of this was in a Town Hall meeting in which one of the participants in the audience used the word mankind in a question to him. When he corrected them by saying “We like to say peoplekind not necessarily mankind. It’s more inclusive.” [4]. The controversial point is that the person who said that was a woman and so he was ”mansplaining”.

2018 - C46 §296

This law was repealed in 2018. Simply, this law doesn’t allow a person to write about a particular religion but does if you write in “good faith” [9]. The point of contention is not with the law itself, but why it was repealed. At the same time, the UK was suffering through a “Cold Civil War” which was kicked off by a religious crime in the country. What caused the contention was the fact that the UK had the same law but without a subsection and with a long prison sentence [11][11a].

2020’s

The Lockdowns From The Pandemic

Some odd or amusing events that happened during the Canadian lockdown

Toronto - Ontario

While Toronto was under lockdown, another point of contention arose because bigger stores such as Costco could stay opened while smaller stores couldn’t [5][5a]. One business, in particular, was a charcoal grill which was known for its brisket. The owner of the charcoal grill refused to close as his business was successful and he was later arrested. He was released and then conformed to other aspects of the lockdown so he could remain open, such as having fewer tables and having them spaced far apart. Nevertheless, he should still not have re-opened his restaurant as he did and so he was arrested again. He was released due to a petition.

Winipeg - Manitoba

In Manitoba, as with Wales in the UK. Manitoba had illogical lockdown rules for its stores [7], such as not allowing people to buy winter clothes just before winter. In front of the controversy this caused, the rules were changed [6].

Edmonton - Alberta

May 4th is a date during which science-fiction franchises are celebrated. This originates from the Star Wars franchise because of how similar the common phrase “may the force be with you” is to that date.   On this day in 2020, a person dressed as a storm trooper and holding a model gun was arrested by the police who thought this was a real gun [8].
