TTRPGs are all about imagination, of coure we may be using aids like Roll20 and so on today but stiill. As a Game Master it's good to have the skill to descbe the looks of NPC with your own words.
This is what I usuually do when it comes to describing the looks of my npn player characters.
Hair: length, style, condition. This is important, are these short, ginger and spiky or perhaps a long , flowing afro har extensions.
Face: shape, expression, one distinct detail.
Eyes: Describe colour or look (tired, sharp, blank). Eyes are one of the things we notice first.
Skin: Describe tone and texture.
Facial hair: Do they have any? If yes, how long, what colous, how it’s kept.
Build: Is this is giant or a tiny figur. Describe height, weight and posture.
Clothes: what they wear. Are these new, clean expensive or worn out. Cloths can give away a lot of details.
Hands: clean, rough, scarred, missing fingers.
Boots: describe the boots, are they worn out sugesting a long journey ?
Example NPC encouner based on our tips so far.
Let's say the players meet a warrior guarding a caravan.
Hair: Long braided extensions flowing past her shoulders, beads woven into some of the braids.
Face: Round with high cheekbones, calm expression, a small scar on her chin.
Eyes: Dark brown, alert, constantly scanning the surroundings.
Skin: Deep brown, smooth.
Facial hair: None.
Build: Small and compact, stands with her weight on the balls of her feet, ready to move.
Clothes: Worn leather armor, fitted and practical, a few scratches across the chest piece.
Hands: Calloused fingers, grip marks on the palms from holding a sword.
Boots: Leather boots that come up to mid-calf, dust-covered but well-maintained.
Overall impression: Finish with one line that sums them up.
