Sasquash

Link Rind Florabeast

With its strength and versatility, the Sasquash has played an important role in the history of the New World, and is poised to do the same wherever it is grown. Its profile is easily recognizable, standing upright on two legs like a great ape, with long arms that nearly reach its knees. Five fingers and toes make it even more similar to a large person with a shiny rind.

While it lacks the fine control to use many tools made for human hands, it is surprisingly capable of using implements that only use simple motions, like axes and hammers, though they are strong enough on their own to push over trees and split boulders. They can also be convinced to carry objects and parcels when needed.

The Sasquatch is the symbol of the Pacifica Federation, and many of the tribes there incorporate a caricature of it into their flags and heraldry. It is a relatively new addition to the commonly-grown Florabeasts of pioneers, as it took much negotiation with the Peoples there to allow the settlers access to their seeds.

Name Explanation
Sasquatch is an alternative name for the Bigfoot ape-like cryptid. It is a small change to produce a "squash" in the word for the name of this Florabeast. While the term sasquatch was first coined in a magazine article from 1929, it is derived from the phrase "hairy man" in  an indigenous language spoken in what is now British Columbia. There have also been legends of large, hairy, shadowy creatures from the beginning of many cultures across the continent.
