Hippopotato

River Tuber Florabeast

Florabeasts are generally well-suited for traveling, as they can feed on the soil, sun, and water of nearly any climate. Some, like the Hippopotato, require such specific conditions that they are only planted by those who rarely intend to leave their homes.

Covered in a brown, tough skin, with a white, soft interior that is only visible when they open their massive jaws to yawn, Hippopotatoes are semi-aquatic creatures that spend nearly all of their time in the water. They socialize and play, swimming up and down the river banks, and will calve-split new tubers only in the water. On land, they become ponderous and slow, obligingly carrying out their planter's wishes so they can return to the water as soon as possible.

In the wild, Hippopotatoes rarely leave their rivers and ponds at all, and are thought to be beneficial to natural fish populations, which feed on the flaky residue they leave behind when wallowing in the mud.

Name Explanation
The first 'po' syllable in hippopotamus (not the second) is the same as the first syllable of potato. Hippos also resemble potatoes rather strikingly. The author does acknowledge that potatoes originated in South America while hippos originated in Africa, but the joke was just too good to pass up.
