Basil'isk

Royal Repellent Florabeast

Many things are commonly associated with royalty: crowns, scepters, thrones, robes, and a certain frilled Florabeast. The Basil'isk is found in paintings and records dating back to antiquity, when planting one was considered a privilege left to the ruling elite. A famous tale recounts a young commoner who owns a Basil'isk, but disguises it as a Collard Lizard to minimize suspicion. The truth inevitably comes out, and the boy and his beast are roped into a scheme by a gang of thieves to switch places with the young prince and scam money from the kingdom. Of course, the pauper really is the prince, switched at birth, and he imprisons the thieves for a happy ending.

Nowadays, this Florabeast is commonly grown around the world, and everyone gets to enjoy its unique talents. The most spectacular one is its ability to run across shallow water, using its wide feet and toes as a form of flotation system. The other is the frilled ridge that runs along its head and back, which emits a savory aroma that is pleasing to humans but horrifying to insects. Pesky bugs will keep a wide berth from this Florabeast and anyone nearby it.

Name Explanation
The name of the plant is contained in the name of the animal. This Florabeast is not based on the mythical lizard, since Florabeasts don't have powers that could be considered magical. Given the presence of other mythological creatures in the world, though, a serpent that can kill with its stare probably exists somewhere. The scientific name of the plant and the real animal are very similar: the lizard is of the genus basilicus and the plant is properly ocimum basilicum.
