History of the Clertu Shanat, Wolf-Dwarf, and the founding of Bundabiln

The texts are less than clear regarding where the dwarves of Bundabiln came from. But from what you have gleaned from a quick reading of the texts at your disposal. There was a great schism between various dwarven clans over twelve millennia ago. A great clan leader, Taark Shanat, led a great migration from caverns (the word for cavern as used here is ancient, and may actually refer to homeland rather than a true cavern) far away, called in the ancient dwarven tongue, the Bhaerynden. He was known as "the Crusader" and he founded an ancient empire, known as the Shanatar. You recall some of these legends and histories, as similar to those you've heard on your homeworld, Toril. The descendants of these dwarves would eventually become the shield dwarves. The texts here talk about a son of Taark, Clertu Shanat. Through ancient rituals, he imbued himself with the essence of his spirit protector, a fierce wolf, becoming a ferocious half-dwarf, half-wolf creature. Taark used his son and a small contingent of like wolf-dwarves as shock troops as what would become Shanatar was slowly carved out. Eventually, Clertu and his group of wolf-dwarves became so blood-thirsty and crazed that Taark was forced to banish them from the kingdom.   The texts indicate that they traveled many many leagues, until they found themselves at a strange portal. Entering it, they came to here, what would be known as Bundabiln. Here in this large cavern, they founded a new kingdom. Once in this cavern, their wolf-like forms could no longer manifest. It seemed they were protected from both their blessing of animal-like form, and the curse it had become.   The texts indicate that experiments by sages believed the crystals that were throughout the cavern acted as a sort of dampering field on the curse. The Bundabiln dwarves would carve ornate amulets from the crystals to ward off the curse of lycanthropy and keep it at bay. The texts also go into some detail regarding the other powers of the crystals. It does appear some enchantment work is required to make them useful. However, they have great protective (abjuration) magic as well as evocation (apparently the light they shed).
