Mud Soil

by hughpierre
Mud soil is an artificial top soil blend developed by the conquered valley dwellers later known, dismissively, as the Mud Men.

Utility

Despite their perceived backwardness, their most enduring contribution was this transformative agricultural technology. It was the first time that large-scale, long-term food production was possible in previously inhospitable terrain.
Contemporary thinking states that the mud people were so beneath the advance Kang that they were ridiculously easy to conquer. It is this perception that named the conquered as 'Mud Men'.   Any other name(s) that they may have called themselves were lost forever.

Manufacturing

The most iconic invention from the most ancient people is a means of agricultural soil management: mud soil. This is a light brownish soil made from a mixture of charcoal, bone, broken pottery, garbage and human urine/excrement to the low fertility valley soil.   The medium is churned and left to rest in pits for up to a month before being applied to fields or gardens. Over time, this material regenerates the landscape and gradually darkens into a dense, fertile loam capable of retaining water and resisting erosion.

Social Impact

It is well believed that this fertile rich mud made settlement possible and realistically feasible where the natural ground was thin and acidic. Indeed, wherever wanu delivery is not bottlenecked, or is generally infrequent, mud soil continues to be. However, if improperly made can turn 'sour' which can, inturn, lead to crop failure.

Access & Availability
