Ice Wall

by hughpierre

Purpose / Function

The ice wall of Hananhallpa is a temporary defensive structure traditionally and intentionally grown by the glacialists. It serves as an immediate way to impede would-be invaders by growing an impressive tower of ice across a mountain pass.

Sensory & Appearance

As it stands, incomplete sections look like collapsed terraces. In the bright light, it can look iridescent in some places and glitter with trapped minerals and air pockets in others.

Denizens

The mysterious people living at the highest levels can only sparsely populate the few liveable spaces.   However, this does not prelude them from invasion by those living in the lower areas. The emeral people have made several forays. Though the most recent, and by far the largest, was an opportunistic attempt by an innoit general not long after they had subjugated the people around the Sumag Wagta Ch'in.

Hazards & Traps

Especially because the structure is incomplete, the wall is riddled with gaping faults, broken shards and vertical hollows for climbers to vanish. Sheets crashing can sound like thunder where the ice has grown too quickly, or unevenly. Some even say that it can cause an unnatural snow blindess to those who look at it for too long.

Environmental Effects
Even unfinished, the wall has disrupted the migratory paths of various terrestrial animals.   In lower levels, redirected meltwater can pool into unnatural ice bogs that damage the local flora.
