Merfolk

The sahuagin were relentless. They just kept coming and coming, and they were only getting stronger as the battle waged on. They needed to end this now. The druids were almost done with their summoning, they just needed to hold out a little longer. Spears and tridents were being thrusted all over the place, trying to prevent the sahuagin from getting any farther. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the sahuagin were pushed back, and thrown amok in the open ocean. The water elemental was here, and was now throwing them all over the place. They began to retreat, but the elemental wasn’t gonna just let them get away. It chased down and killed any amount of sahuagin it could get its hands on.
Merfolk are the fish people of the oceans and coastal forests. They protect everything within their domain, from the nature of these places, to the sailing ships that other races bring in.

Prideful People

Merfolk are incredibly prideful of their heritage and what they do. They don’t take kindly to insults directed at them, and rarely give any out. To some races they may come off as a little arrogant, but they try not to.

Protectors of the Sea, Nature, and People

Merfolk are aware of the dangers that both nature and humanoid races present to one another, and to them, it's their job to prevent the two from harming each other. Merfolk know of and fight against the dangers of the seas, such as krakens, leviathans, sahuagin, and other monstrous entities, like owlbears or shambling mounds.

Variations Between Clans

Merfolk are some of the most varied races on Fortuun, aside from humans. Their genetic structure changes rapidly, and a clan may be unrecognizable in as little as a few generations. They vary wildly from scale color to fin placement, keeping only a few select traits that all merfolk are like. Some merfolk have cobalt blue scales, with fins along their back, arms, and legs, while another tribe just a few hundred miles away may be pink with leathery skin, and a single dorsal fin on their back. Merfolk are always bipedal, with gill slits along their sides, with webbed feet and hands.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Merfolk are bipedal humanoids who have scales and fins similar to fish. They have webbed toes and fingers.

Biological Traits

Merfolk clans vary far more than any other sentient species, scales ranging from pink to green to blue, fins of various types and placements. Some merfolk don't even have scales, but instead have tough, leathery skin like that of a sea turtle.

Genetics and Reproduction

Merfolk lay large eggs, being squishy protective egg sacs for the child. When a male fertilizes it, the egg begins to develop the child. The process and egg usually remains underwater, in special breeding stations for the merfolk to help protect them. The egg takes nearly a full year before hatching from the soft gelatin shell.

Growth Rate & Stages

Merfolk take about 30 years to fully mature, starting life as small tiny fish before developing limbs. As they grow up, they lose their tails, loosing most of it by the age of 5, where they are capable of swimming rather well on their own. From here is similar to a humans growth.

Ecology and Habitats

Merfolk live in and around large bodies of water. Most notable are oceans and shorelines, as well as large lakes.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Most merfolk diets consist of lots of fish, but also small game and easy to find fruits. Younger an immature merfolk may eat large amounts of algea.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Merfolk live in clans, where the elders are respected above all else. They teach their wisdom and pass it on to the next generations, allowing them to become better. The elders demand but deserve the respect they are given.

Average Intelligence

Merfolk are often adept at spacial awareness and navigating the wilderness, thanks to spending their entire lives in both the water and forests.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Merfolk are capable of seeing in the dark thanks to darkvision.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Merfolk don't have many differences between gender, and as such don't have different names for either. They often have names that come from nature or can describe the individual.

Relationship Ideals

Merfolk mate for life, and will often fight together just for the sake of each other. Two individuals who work incredibly well together are always better than two who don't.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Nearly every Merfolk uses Aquan as their default language, but they also learn a sign language called Merfolk, which is used for when they need to communicate underwater. For other races, they learn how to speak Common.

Common Dress Code

Merfolk rarely wear more clothing than is necessary to cover their crotches. As they are not mammals, females don't need to cover their chest since there is nothing there.

Historical Figures

A well known Merfolk amongst scholars and those curious on history will likely know of Sakura, a merfolk from the third generation ever and who became a walker at the age of 17. She is the namesake of the month of Sak (8th month), and is considered to be the mother of biology.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Merfolk don't dislike other races, but they tend to keep to themselves. Wood elves are the only races merfolk like by default, as they both have similar goals: keep nature safe. They do love sailors and other water based folk, as they also tend to enjoy the open sea and its majesty.
