ICS Elysium
A fair-sized, elegant and sleek vessel, with sweeping curves and unadorned design. The Elysium has a faintly pinched-oval silhouette from above or below, and from the side is slender, but not flat. The wings are a gradual delta shape, starting from the centre of the ship, while the tail is low and subtle.
It is highly agile, designed to dodge through asteroid belts with ease. As an exploration vessel, it does not carry significant military capacity, but it is not defenceless either. The Elysium's hull is triple-layered, though the outermost layer is not defensive in purpose - it is capable of flipping over in sections, allowing numerous highly-tuned sensors to be exposed, for analysing local conditions within atmospheres and space dust clouds. These sensors are normally kept stored to protect and maintain them when not in use.
It is the only ship within the Ilios system with an FTL drive, as the ability to make new ones was lost shortly before the initial transit to the Ilios system by human colonists. The ship itself has great historical and cultural significance, as it is the very same ship that brought humans to the Ilios system. Despite its age, it is still fully functional, and is carefully maintained by interplanetary efforts.
Although it was used to bring humanity to the Ilios system, the ship is significantly smaller than most space stations, and certainly smaller than most colony ships. It houses a relatively small populace, just large enough to avoid genetic problems from inbreeding. Back when it still served its primary function, it also housed hundreds of thousands of frozen embryos, which have since been used to populate the five planets of the Ilios system.
Power Generation
The main source of power for the ship are a series of pulse fusion reactors, some dedicated to producing power, others dedicated to producing fuel for the power supplying ones. The only fuel the ship requires from external sources is deuterium oxide, otherwise known as heavy water, which is readily available on interplanetary trade (except from Astraia). Powerful electromagnetic shielding exists around each reactor to keep from creating interference and radiation problems, along with the rooms being extensively lead-lined, and are constructed with radiation traps.
Propulsion
The Elysium has one large engine used for high velocity flight, and multiple smaller engines and thrusters for slower, more finely-controlled flight.
The ship does have an FTL drive, of the Alculbierre type. It warps spacetime to contract in front, and expand behind, in the process creating a naked singularity at the front, with a plane of flat space in the centre of the bubble. The Elysium's shields are strong enough to withstand and deflect the Hawking radiation from the singularity, though energy concerns keep each trip relatively short. When exiting superluminal speed, extremely energetic particles are shed at the front of the ship - akin to the "infinitely" blue-shifted radiation that occurs at the inner event horizon of certain types of black hole. Due to these factors, the ship's drive is utilized very cautiously, as it is very possible for its warp bubble (which in truth is more of a bottle shape) to annihilate most things around it - this can also be used offensively in emergency situations.
The drive, at lower settings, is also capable of manipulating quantum gravity to create an anti-gravity effect while within gravity wells, allowing for The Elysium to turn off its engines while docking at orbital stations.
This drive also requires an extensive cooling system, primarily composed of liquid hydrogen, and is managed by a particularly large quantum computer.
Weapons & Armament
The Elysium's weapons systems are of limited nature - no solid projectiles or nuclear weaponry. Instead, particle accelerators (PAs) fueled by the ship's shielding systems - and whose primary purpose is for study of various gravitational and magnetosphere field effects - are used offensively when the need arises.
Armor and defense
The ship's shields make use of electromagnetic and gravitational manipulation to deflect attacks away from the ship itself, but must be dropped in the relevant section if the particle accelerators are to be used (else the shields will deflect the ship's own PA emissions).
Additional & auxiliary systems
The Elysium's systems are managed by a fully sapient and self-aware A.I. (commonly called an S.A.I. - Sapient Artificial Intelligence), which is fundamentally programmed to be considerate and compassionate to humans. Though the S.A.I. is capable of piloting the ship entirely on its own, human pilots are typically used - more for the peace of mind of the humans, rather than necessity. The ship's cybersecurity software is both exceptionally robust and ever-evolving, with all new data being captured in sandbox programs until it can be verified as safe.
This S.A.I. is called by the ship's name, and the two are treated as the same entity in most contexts.
The Elysium also contains multiple qauntum transporters, used to move people or cargo from the ship to the surface of a planet, to the interior of a space station, or to from one area of Elysium to another.
