1492 DR 13 Nightal (The Drawing Down)

General Summary

Returning to Baldur's Gate, we spent two days working with Paelias on our divinely-enforced oath (which went over well), and getting an update on the state of the Elturian refugees. We learned that a northern stronghold called Firehammer Hold had sent guild craftsfolk and clerics of Moradin to aid in the rapid construction of homes in which the refugees can live through the winter. We also learned that Ontharr Frume, a paladin of Torm and leader in the Order of the Gauntlet, is apparently suffering from severe survivors guilt over not be able to protect Elturel while it was in Avernus, and is living in self-imposed exile in Scornubel. Harad, with some help from Leo, penned a letter to the paladin, hoping to inspire him to come to Baldur's Gate and aid the survivors.

Returning to the domain of the ki-rin Renzhi, we suddenly came under attack by the celestial guardian and his allies. We quickly perceived something odd was afoot. Though he bore the brunt of the attack for it, Harad charged forward and managed to get through to Renzhi. The ki-rin revealed he and his allies were seeing a replay of an assault by Abishai they had experienced a few months ago, which was obscuring our party from their sight. The ki-rin was distressed as his truesight should have seen through any illusions, which meant what they were viewing was something more intricate. We pieced together that it may be related to our quest, since a curse cast "backward through time" is at the heart of our current endeavor. Pleasantly, Renzhi also revealed that, now that he could see us, he could also see radiant Celestial markings hovering before us, confirming that Lathander had indeed endorsed our oath. He was now willing to let us venture into the cloud giant's former dwelling.

With peace restored, we returned to Renzhi's redoubt to recover and plan, with Renzhi promising to give us more information on what to expect. We also mulled over how we might subdue or contain the remnant of Cresseret that protects his vault, and the nature of the Bog Hag's anathema. There is a possibility that the "hated expression" might be some evidence of the hag experiencing an emotion such as sadness, joy, or kindness, which she would likely revile, which was somehow preserved.
