Brother Kaylen Vera

History

Born in the northern valleys near Neverwinter , Kaylen was delivered to the Sun Monastery as a boy—an orphan of humble origin raised in quiet devotion. The monks of the Sun Soul taught him discipline, balance, and the belief that every life’s purpose was to reflect the light of the divine through self-mastery.
For two decades he lived by that creed. Kaylen rose hoping to become a teacher of meditation and the monastery’s primary martial instructor. His days were predictable, peaceful, and dry as dust—until the day the mountain erupted.

When Mount Hotenow exploded, fire rained from the sky. Kaylen watched friends and students consumed by flame, unable to save them. That night changed him forever. Faith turned to silence; devotion to ash.

Background

Years followed in a haze. The monk who once preached restraint now wandered taverns and border towns, drinking, gambling, and seeking fleeting pleasures to drown the screams still echoing in his mind. His body remained disciplined, but his spirit grew aimless.

Haunted by survivor’s guilt, Kaylen avoided Neverwinter for decades. The thought of returning to the shadow of Mount Hotenow—and to the memories buried there—filled him with quiet dread. The Chasm, still burning with elemental fire and ash, served as a reminder of what he lost. Only after it was finally sealed did he find the courage to return to the city.

He spent most of those years wandering the northern frontiers, where cold wind and falling snow offered peace—and where fire was rare. The icy silence of those lands dulled his fear, and for a time, he believed himself free of it. He survived by taking small jobs that needed a quick hand or steady nerves: caravan escort, guard, courier. Never for long; he left before people could ask questions or offer sympathy. Most of his earnings vanished on comfort, company, or the next drink.

Despite his fall from grace, flashes of his old self remain—a sharp mind, patient eye, and a quiet compassion that surfaces when least expected. Kaylen fights not for glory or faith, but to forget, if only for a while.

Associates

  • The Order of the Sun Soul (formerly): Kaylen still carries the prayer beads of his order, though he no longer recites their hymns.
  • Taverns of the High Road: scattered inns where his name is half-remembered; to some, he is a charming storyteller, to others, a drunkard with a warrior’s reflexes.

Titles & Honors

  • Brother Kaylen – his monastic title, still used by habit though the faith behind it has waned.
  • The Ash Monk – a whispered nickname among those who’ve seen the faint burn scars across his arms and chest.

Current Chapter

Kaylen’s long exile from Neverwinter ends not with redemption, but with betrayal. After returning to the city, he sought out Lyssandra—a face from his past and perhaps the only person he trusted enough to share a drink with. But the reunion turned sour. Demanding coin he did not have, Lyssandra handed him over to the city guards, claiming debts unpaid.

Her motives remain uncertain—greed, fear, or the whisper of darker influence. What matters now is that Kaylen has landed in @Hallow Gate Jail, trapped with strangers whose fates intertwine with his own. In their company, he may yet find purpose again—or fall deeper into the shadows he’s been running from for thirty years.
