The Phantom Knight
Long ago, amidst the perilous war betwixt Merringe and Ryde, there came forth a knight that no-one knew.
The knight was clad in full black armor, a billowing cape behind. In both hands did they wield a great and heavy blade, its edge honed in sharpest dark. Yet, all who looked upon the knight remembered one thing above all: The piercing red glow from deep within the helm, crimson eyes visible no matter the light, no matter the distance.
At the forefront of the decisive battle before the shattered gates of the city they drew their great blade. Even as the knights around them fell to steel and despair in equal measure, this knight never once stopped nor faltered. Even as they suffered blows that would slay even the mightiest of warriors, they did not fall. They fought on like a suit of armor by the spirits of all fallen knights possessed.
In the end, after seven long days and nights of constant assault, Ryde's bottomless morale broke, driving the invaders away. Then, the knight vanished, drifting away across the mountain of fallen into the night.
Though Ryde's commanders were not willing to let the shining jewel that was Merringe go, neither did the Phantom Knight permit them to take it. At the sites of the most dire of battles, the knight would appear. They spoke not a word but that to lead and guide their fellow knights. In the end, after one final battle in defense of the gates to the city, the wicked commanders in Ryde withdrew from Merringe, having taken only what they could from the Prisma Forest.
Among the very last of the Dark Knights, the Phantom Knight offered the city a royal bow, and vanished into the wilds, never to be seen again. Some say that the knight is alive, and but waiting. Some say that in its hour of greatest need, the Phantom Knight will come forth once again.
