Perception Weaving

Perception Weaving is... well, first of all, wildly misunderstood on the Fortrop. It allows its users to alter the sensory experiences of other individuals, creating temporary illusions, or halucinations as one might call them.

They lack the ability to create anything tangible but they can impact the perceived reality.

As mentioned in the main article, Perception Weaving is characterised by yellow to orange threads. They can vary in hue, lightness, and saturation but don't overextend to greens or reds.

The cost for Perception Weaving varies based on the complexity and duration of the illusion being crafted.

  • Simple illusions, for example a quick audiotry cue require minimal mana and can be sustained for longer periods without draining the Weaver.
  • More complex illusions, however, (creating a fully immersive audiotry environment, for example) demand more mana. These can only be maintained for a short duration, depending on the Weaver's reserves.
  • The length plays a role too. Something short might be barely noticable to the Weaver, whereas an extended illusion can deplete their energy fast.

Manifestation

Similarly to other types, Perception Weaving begins with the formation of a single (yellow to orange) thread between the Weaver's hands.

There are three main types of illusions:

  1. Visual;
  2. Auditory;
  3. Tactile.

Unlike other forms of Weaving, Perception Weaving requires layering. The first Thread is the core and represents the focus of the illusion. That core is then surrounded by additional threads that represents details: colours, shapes, sounds, etc.

  • For example, if a Perception Weaver wanted to create an illusion of a marketplace, they'd have to start with the core, being the scene, and then fold additional threads to weave in details like the chatter, the vendors, the smells.
  • Achieveable? Yes. Manageable to hold up for longer than a minute? Unlikely.
  • The more details, the bigger the scene; the more mana it drains.

Another thing that's different is that, the Weaver must know what they're creating. Illusions are drawn from memories to ground them in reality. They are, essentially, a "copy-paste" of the Weaver's prior experiences.

  • So, for example, an auditory illusion can not be entirely fictatious, it has to mimic real sounds.
  • If a Weaver wanted to create an illusion of, say, a politician delivering a speech, they must have previously witnessed the politician say those words.
  • Should they attempt to mimic the politician's speech without having heard them, the result would be a distorted version of the intended message, akin to splicing different sounds together.

Perception Weaving is inherently temporary. The illusions created are fleeting and unravel over time, similar to threads coming undone. Weavers can choose to end the illusion prematurely or allow it to dissipate naturally.

If a Weaver miscalculates or loses focus while crafting an illusion, the result may be an incomplete or nonsensical experience.
