Folkvang city of the worthy.
Folkvang city of the worthy.
Folkvang is a legendary city in the realm of the Gatekeeper, where those that died can continue their life in the afterlife. Only those judged as worthy by the ancient apple tree spirit, the guardian of Folkvang’s gate, gain entrance into a city where every dream is reality. Folkvang plays a central role in the worship of the Gatekeeper and is often used as encouragement to live a proper life.
The apple tree spirit listens to the deceased’s testimony about his life and weights the hart against one of his own petals to see how virtuous he was during his life. Those that pass the test are granted access into Folkvang, the heavenly city. Those that fail have to take a bite from a fallen apple and are send to one of the lesser cities in the realm of the Gatekeeper. Depending on their sins in the eyes of the apple tree spirit they are send to a fitting city. Those that lie are strangled by the roots of the guardian and send to Náströdr as his nourishment. Sometimes he’s not sure of their honesty and sends them back to Leann to prove their worth.
In Folkvang everyone is equal, beggars live side by side with nobles, every wish is fulfilled by loyal spirit like servants that look as floral dragons. The only restriction is that things that go beyond reason can result in re-judgement or even banishment out of the city. Those banished from the city become cursed ghosts knocking forever at the gates of cities and doors on the material plane.
The graves of those that live in Folkvang will never be cleansed by the followers of the Gatekeeper. These are the only graves in Leann that exist forever and serve as a clear sign to the living of the value of upholding the traditions and faith in the Gatekeeper.
