Art Graveyards

Normal people and graveyards

Everyone knows The Graveyard - the main large Graveyard right by Haunted Forest, where all the graves are. The graves of the ancient people and even the graves of the recently deceased. This graveyard is known for its black crosses scattered around the area, but this is now how all of the graveyards from the past used to be. Oh no, the ancient graveyards were full of different gravestones, from simple crosses, to elaborate statues and crypts. Sure, it was different back then, people were dying a lot sooner and more frequently and death was much more a part of people’s lives, that’s why they put more care and attention to these things, but today death is a far more rare occurrence, and even then people here don’t like to be reminded of it so much, that’s why the push it away to this Graveyard area with only simple crosses. Well, normal people at least.

What about bat people?

But by now we all know that the Wasteland is inhabited by some of the most abnormal people of our modern world. The ones we have in mind today are none other than bat people of Wasteland. Unlike “normal” people, they are very much obsessed with death, but also show great appreciation for more traditional, tangible art forms, such as sculptures. So what better way to combine the two than in the form of these elaborate gravestones?

Art graveyards

Now of course, people here die just as rarely as everywhere else in the world, and their relationship with death is even more complicated, that’s not the point here. But the point is, low death rates will not stop these people from building up elaborate graveyards anyway.

Well, they aren’t really “grave”yards as no dead people are buried here, they serve more as art parks full of gravestone inspired art. Every bat settlement that is worth something here has one of those just outside of the city walls, or sometimes inside as well.

These serve as sort of outdoor art galleries, but are often more than that. See, according to ancient legends about vampires, vampires were dead, or more like, undead, but that’s not the point, the point is, if you are a vampire, you would have had to die at some point and have a grave. So it’s not uncommon, especially among the wealthier bat people, to commission a gravestone like this and claim it as theirs, so that they could point it out to people as sort of a flex - see, I am a real vampire and I do have a real grave. Even though all of the people here know very well what they are - fruit bats pretending to be vampires. And they don’t let outsiders in anyway so who are they playing pretend for? I was about to say “goddamn these people are cringe” but then remembered that they live literally in the middle of Wasteland, that’s literally the most interesting thing they have to do here to entertain themselves. That and creating art, such as these art graveyards. So that’s actually pretty cool.
