Head of state and ruler of a kingdom. The title and responsibilities are typically passed through a male bloodline, although in the absence of a son, it may go to a daughter if the king has made prior testament to his wishes. If not, the next closest male relative becomes king. In some rare instances, a military general can beome king by popular uprising. The king's personal estate is separate from the royal estate and is often related to a title that has been in the family. Almost always, the king also has the titles of Lord and Duke, but only uses the highest title in formal settings. It is not required for the king to have been a lord or duke before ascending the throne. In the event that the ruling monarch is a queen, the title of king is used only when her husband is a prince in his own right, otherwise he would carry the title of prince.
