Euska (yoos-KA)
A human shapeshifter with the form of a wolf.
Basic Information
Anatomy
While in their wolf form, they age as wolves; and in their human form, age as humans. The more time they spend as wolves, the shorter their lifespan.
Growth Rate & Stages
Young euska can be raised as human infants or wolf pups; some mothers prefer pups because the weaning and growth to adulthood is much faster while others prefer to keep their children in human form as long as possible. There is no cultural standard either way.
Ecology and Habitats
They are hunters and trappers by trade and live exclusively in the tundra regions of Morforst.
Additional Information
Social Structure
They live in communal villages when at all possible but can be found living alone in underground dens when their survival is threatened. These dens are large enough to house them in their human form and can be quite comfortable. Some prefer the solitude.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Native to Morforst.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
They protect the wellspring in the area and their canine-like senses allow them to "see" the flow of magic in ways other species can't.
Civilization and Culture
Average Technological Level
Their technology level is a carry-over from the stone age with tools mostly of bone harvested from their kills.
Common Dress Code
They make their clothing from their own discarded fur and that of other animals so they stay clothed when shifting from wolf back to human.
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Euska are deeply religious and have centuries of rituals built around holy sites devoted to Alabaster.
Within their borders, there are hundreds of holy places. The magic from the wellsprings seeps into the ground and enhances what grows and lives (although magic itself is neutral). The euska also have roots in agricultural and livestock. Every year sacrifices are brought to the main holy site where they are blessed in Alabaster's name, immersed in the flow of magic overnight, and then prepared and served to everyone as a feast. This provides them with immunity and protection against certain illnesses, and brings blessings and good favor from Alabaster. When these sacrifices are not given and the people turn their back on Alabaster, their health and land suffers.
