For years, megawatt-range flying laser platforms powered by nuclear turbofans have been lurking in the thick atmosphere of the gas giant Cell, denying any foes orbital superiority. Able to shoot down any missile, and immune to kinetic weaponry from the thick atmosphere, the hundreds of MRDEWOSAs (megawatt-range directed energy weapon orbital superiority airborne, commonly known as Medusas) soaring in the clouds would prove tough nuts to crack.
Operation Cloudburst Martyr was an Pantan offensive intended to down every Coalition Medusa to the core of Cell. A temporary blind spot in the Cerulean Medusa defense network allowed a massive cadre of armed spaceplanes to dive into the atmosphere undetected, and slip beneath the silvery clouds. By the time Cerulean radar detected them, it was too late. Masked by the clouds, the Pantan strike fighters wiped out 9/10ths of the entire Coalition Medusa force.
This was followed by an immediate and heavy Coalition retaliation in force. With the Pantans having total air superiority over Cell, destroying their Medusa platforms would be nigh-impossible. But just letting an attack this consequential go would be both humiliating and a strategic debacle. And so, before PANTA could consolidate their air power on Cell any further, the Coalition struck.
Detonating a high-yield EMP weapon in the upper atmosphere of Cell, a massive counterattack force re-entered through the artificial blind spot. Outnumbered 3-1 by enemy forces, the Coalition forces took huge losses, but ultimately were successful in their mission.
With virtually no Medusas from either side remaining in the Cellian atmosphere, all strategic significance immediately faded, and both factions pulled their assets out. What would come to be known as the Cellian Air War would end up being an inconclusive and pointless endeavor that ultimately threw away billions of dollars into the core of a gas giant. A competition where both opponents trade sticks and break them.
