The Wilder

The northern reaches of Fir'nost are largely uncivilized and outside the jurisdiction of the Sovereign Crown, so civilized people tend to avoid it and people on the run tend to flock to it. The place is called the Wilder (pronounced will-der). It also has a native population in the cold desert mountains that are usually viewed by others as brutish and savage people; to the people of the Sovereign Crown, they're known as Wildermen. Despite their reputation, these people keep to themselves, and it is rare to see them beyond the reaches of the Wilder. They follow a pantheon of nature gods, headed by Sontonga the Creator. Outsiders call the gods the Wilder Gods; they're generally seen as pagan, and practicing the Way of Sontonga is frowned upon heavily.

Geography

The southern reaches of the Wilder where it borders with Motasicre and the Sovereign Lands is mostly desert: dry and hot in the lower elevations and dry and cold in the upper elevations. As the Wilder sprawls northward, the desert turns to scrub-lands and then to scraggy, arid forests with brown, tall grasses. The most northern reaches of the Wilder, those lands uncharted by any Sovereign man, are filled with lush deciduous forests and banked by tall white-capped mountains. Most of the Wilder's elevation is flat with small hills; the only major elevation is along its borders. The Wilder is like a massive bowl, a heavy rainshadow on its southern edges and much precipitation on its northern borders. To the northeast and west are sprawling marshes that drain the watery contents of the Wilder bowl into the oceans.

Fauna & Flora

Much of the flora in the southern Wilder is scrub bushes like gorse and wild olive, spaced with thick golden grasses and wildflowers. As one travels northward, the flora changes to larger, lusher trees as the air grows cooler and rainier. The northern reaches behold great oak trees and ancient maples that reach up to the heavens.   In terms of fauna, the Wilder is lush with it. Most of the dry scrub lands are occupied by antelope herds and great carnivorous birds. Smaller creatures, such as the willow aster snake and the fiddlemouse, are prevalent in the grassy patches. Large populations of deer and dire wolves live in the shadow of the northern mountains alongside hallowed owls and marsh lions.

Natural Resources

The Wildermen take little from their home without returning it eventually, but the Wilder is rich in lumber in the north and precious metals in the south. The land's many game animals are migratory, living in the south in the summer and travelling north to warmer climates in the winter. In the south, there is a large bounty of olives, some of which are traded to the Sovereign Lands to the south.
