Halfling
Halflings, also known in some places as "mousefolk," are possibly one of the most unusual and highly varied races in Ferlausen. Like the goblinoids, different groups of halfling may appear to be completely distinct species, with totally different characteristics. However, most modern scientists and anthropologists accept that halflings and mousefolk are, in fact, the same species, though a few people do insist that they are separate species merely capable of interbreeding with one another, who have done so to such a degree that the hybrids are more common than the pure breeds.
All halflings are mammalian, bipedal humanoids; that is where the commonalities stop. Halflings may be either plantigrade or digitigrade, may or may not have fur, may or may not have pointed, rodent-like snouts, and may or may not have long, tufted tails. Generally speaking, these traits are displayed on a spectrum from more human-like to more mouse-like.
The most human-like halflings often appear to be miniature humans. They are usually similar in stature and general build to dwarves and do not possess tails, although they may have unusually large ears. The most mouse-like halflings may stand at only just over a foot tall, and appear to be humanoid mice, with a digitigrade stance, mouse-like muzzles, whiskers, fur, large rounded ears and long, tufted tails. They are often referred to as "mousefolk" or some similar variant. In between these two extremes, you may find halflings displaying almost any combination of human and mouse-like traits. Generally speaking, each halfling ethnic group has a specific set of traits that may be displayed.
Most halfling ethnic groups straddle the middle line, looking mostly humanoid, with human-like faces, plantigrade stances, large ears, and long tufted tails.
The precise origins of the halfling species are unknown; some believe them to be the descendants of talking mice from the Feywild, others consider them to be formerly enchanted or cursed dwarves, and still others believe them to be the result of ancient groups of druids casting spells to gift mice and other rodents with sentience.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Halflings only have four digits on each hand and foot - three fingers and a thumb on the hands, and four toes on the feet. Digitigrade halflings do not possess dewclaws.
Many halflings, although not all of them, have tails. Generally speaking, these tails are covered in short fur up to the tip, at which point the fur grows quite long in a tuft of fur similar to a lion's or jerboa's tail, though it can grow quite impressively long. If the halfling has head hair, the fur at the tip of the tail is most commonly identical in color and texture to their head hair.
Genetics and Reproduction
Although genetically speaking, it is believed that all halflings are capable of interbreeding with each other, practically speaking, the size difference between the largest and smallest halflings presents a significant barrier. Despite the existence of various methods of artificial insemination between halfling partners with large size discrepancies, the vast majority of halflings only produce offspring with partners who are fairly close to them in size and displayed traits.
Halfling gestation lasts approximately nine months, regardless of size.
Growth Rate & Stages
Halflings age and mature at a rate slightly slower than that of humans, beginning puberty at around the age of 12-14 years old and becoming fully sexually mature around 20-23. Female halflings generally enter menopause in their 70s or 80s, and the general projected lifespan for a halfling is around 150 years old.
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Halflings are the third most populous species among the sentient species of Ferlausen; as such, they tend to be widely accepted by most people around the world. However, communities of more mouse-like halflings, due to their visual similarities to vermin, may sometimes be shunned or ostracized by other groups. Such communities are often referred to as "ratfolk," a term which many halflings consider offensive, though some communities have actively reclaimed it.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Halflings generally have skin, hair/fur, and eye color in the same basic varieties that humans do.
*Note: Average height and weight are calculated as the mode, rather than the mean, for halflings, as mousefolk tend to skew the results too small to be representative.
