Af Ulmedi

The af ulmedi compose a set of symbols or characters, which are used to write several different languages, the most notable of these being Primordial, the language of the The Elder Elementals. The af ulmedi come in two varieties, af ulmedi con and af ulmedi lis.

Af Ulmedi Con

The af ulmedi con comprise of 256 unique symbols, which can in turn be combined to make any of the several thousand characters which are generally used to write archaic Primordial, as well as a few other ancient languages. Together, the af ulmedi con can be considered akin to radicals in a logographic system.

Af Ulmedi Lis

The af ulmedi lis consist of 128 symbols, derived from the 256 in the af ulmedi con, which have been highly simplified for ease of writing. Rather than forming part of a logographic system, they are phonemic, with each of the possible phonemes of Ancient Primordial corresponding to particular characters. The af ulmedi lis comprise a partial bicameral system in which there is an upper case and lowercase version of each consonant. Vowels have only one character each, which are generally written above the character for the preceding consonant, unless there is no preceding consonant. A few additional symbols function as punctuation marks for the script.   The af ulmedi lis have been adapted for use with a few languages in addition to Primordial - the most notable being their use for many texts written in Giant, as well as Ancient Dwarvish.
