Firbolgs

Firbolg

Beyond the deepest shadows, hidden in the most forbidden glades where no civilization thrives, only the firbolgs watch over and tend to the plants and animals. They pay no heed to the designs of modern society, and are perfectly content being surrounded by nature. The gentle giants know when to withhold themselves, and when to unleash their full might upon their enemies.

Natures Guardians

Firbolgs are large humanoids that resemble humans, although they are distinctly feylike in nature, with their unkempt hair often being green or even plantlike in nature. They have thick, grey skin that is covered in dirt or moss that leaves them unburdened and unbothered. Some firbolgs even enjoy growing small gardens on their back or arms, truly embracing nature. These gardens can contain tiny saplings intending to be planted later when the time is right, small radishes, and even the odd mushroom.

When the first tree grew the goddess of nature, Kiri, knew that it was her purpose to spread the joys of life. As the world flourished she became overburdened by the act of tending to all in the world, and so she sought aid in her endeavor. The other gods were too busy overseeing their own aspects of the world, however, and so she created her own partners in arms. Taking inspiration from the creations of Gallus, she created tall, peaceful creatures that could not only tend to the world, but protect it in times of need. Dubbing them firbolgs, she guided them and showed them the natural beauty of the world, to which they took happily.

For over a thousand years firbolgs fostered the greatest forest in the land, peacefully embracing every aspect of the flora and fauna. This forest, today known as the Sylvan Conclave, was so beautiful the fey lords were almost jealous. Fey visits became commonplace, granting strange magic and even stranger flowers to the material plane. Firbolgs, ever complacent, accepted these gifts with open arms. This would become a repetitive behavior, as when the wood elves came into their own, they too were guided by the teachings of the Firbolgs to embrace the woods and respect all life. It was the firbolgs that imparted fey knowledge and magic onto the elves, and it is said that with this knowledge, the first druid was a firbolg.

Lonesome Hermits

While some firbolgs live together, and every so often they would gather to trade gardening secrets, for large majorities of their life they live independently and tend their own plots. They find aspects of life like crime and violence to be strange and alien. The concept of money and value does not come quickly to a firbolg, who is often trusting by nature. Sometimes a firbolg eventually does grow curious, and whether it is to spread their knowledge, learn about the world, or banishment, they will eventually uproot themselves and seek out strange the unknown.
