Twelve Paladins of Charlemagne
The Twelve Paladins of Charlemagne are the group of knights serving under Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, who were only selected from the most excellent of candidates. Those like Astolfo, Roland, & Oliver are confirmed among these uncertainties. All members are famed for their strength with the exception of Astolfo who is famed as "weak" according to the legends. It is said that as Merlin stepped down from the era of King Arthur, he then helped the twelve Paladins. Most of the Paladins died in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass against Roland's stepfather Ganelon & an enemy army of 400,000 men, against the Paladins' own 20,000. Although Charlemagne arrived with reinforcements, he wasn't able to reach the Paladins in time. They are a group of knights similar to King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. Their exact number of members differ depending upon which documents are used to reference them, but usually there are 12 main paladins.
