Bargains with Others

Others are capable of breaking some of the rules, such as those that are usually used to bind the Oathsworn. The trades that most Others might perform, and the effects such trades have on your person, are outlined here.

Deals Made

  • Swear on your "x/y"
: Often a Spirit will command a practitioner to swear on something, be warned, agreeing to this, even by accident results in the deal being sealed. If an other says "Swear on your Power." it will literally steal Wands from your Wands deck if you fail to fulfill your end of the bargain. They can become more nefarious, saying things like "Your love." or "Your final breath." Its best to just say no outright to these sorts of things, making an oath on Power or an Aspect is best, as you loose the least if you break them. Thankfully when you break one of these sorts of contracts, its usually a minor loss, only a few cards and a few points of negative karma is usually all that is taken. (Though of course, an Oathbonded Vayermancer might become Oathsworn if they break their promise)

  • Sign the Contract
: Less common, but some Spirits have a preference for the old ways. Should you be provided a contract, you should read it in its entirety, and be sure to point out every last contingency and loophole. The Spirit will only follow the letter of that contract, and so should you. Make sure you aren't getting screwed. Contracts often take a lot more from you if you don't fullfill your end of things. Your soul, your firstborn, your family, your name, your home, emotions, etc. Contracts are harder to break. Verbal contracts are even less common, but if a Fey starts listing one off, it is HIGHLY recommended that you do not make any affirmations until it is written down. Fey love to trick people into bad contracts by flooding their speech with legalese.

  • Something Physical
Be extremely wary of these sorts of deals. Spirits don't want physical things very often, unless they are an extremely weak variety (like a goblin) an other that asks to take something from your coat, and allows you to remove anything you don't want to loose before you hand it over, might be after your nametag that you have written on the inside collar. Sometimes they want an artefact of power you carry, other times its something more nefarious.

  • A Trade of Karma
Karmic Trades are the safest form of trading with Spirits, as both parties must agree to the trade before the Karma can be transferred. This ability of Karmic transfer seems to be exclusive to Spirits, as even Practitioners are unable to give others positive Karma or trade in it. Karma therefore has become a sort of currency to Spirits. This is a very comon practice in Goblin Markets (Learn more about those )

Manifestation

A deal manifests differently depending on the type of Other. A Boogyman's deal might feel like a shiver up the spine or a sudden urge to throw oneself under the covers as part of a deal, while a Fey Lord might seal their deal with a kiss or a dance. Whatever the form may be, once the deal is done, it cannot be broken without grave consequences. Sometimes Others provide some loophole or method by which a Practitioner can escape the deal, most often its some task or catch that requires a great adventure to escape the oath made. Something so difficult that it might as well be impossible.

It is unknown presicely why so many Others seem to use this method, but it seems that they most often take perverted joy in watching a practitioner suffer eternally trying to escape the deals they have made.
Finally, even those who have not had their eyes opened to the Stage, and remain behind the Curtain can accidentally agree to contracts and deals, such things often result in Practitioners, but its a method by which Others get by the inability to affect everyone behind the Curtain. They can still feast, it just requires a little more preparation.
