Farhome Settlement Council

The Farhome Settlement Council (FSC) is the body currently overseeing the settlement of the Pelagean Archipelago. This means as a body it oversees:

• Inter settlement communications
• Search & Rescue
• Emergency Services
• Defense
• Inter settlement law enforcement
• Customs
• Infrastructure
• Inter settlement commerce
• The Courts
• Taxation

The communites themselves have their own municipal authorities and agencies but they only opperate at a local level, not at an entire archipelago level. Some barely operate outside of their own community let alone their own island in most cases. Where there is slack in certain areas the FSC takes it up.

The other major aspect of the FSC is the Cartography Bureau or the Cartographer's. They as an arm (and an extremely important one) are responsible for charting, surveying and mapping the various islands and water ways of the archipelago. All of these maps are made available to the public, for a fee. Usually the people keen to purchase data and charts from the Bureau are seafarers of one kind or another (traders or fishes in the main), charter groups (those looking to found their own settlement) or the curious.

The Council has a sizeable tower complex in downtown Freeport; the settlements de facto capital. Membership of the Governing Board of the FSC is by appointment, current office bearers usually select their successor and train them to take over at a moment suitable to the office bearer and the newcomer. Thus within the settlement itself there are some old hands who can take up any vacancy created by emergency or some other incident.

At this present point in time much of the council's activities are taken up with celebrating a century of human settlement on Farhome. The other thing is that while the council itself acts as a 'de facto' regime the overarching agenda is to implement an actual sovereign state structure. To transition from an appointed council to an actual bona fide elected legislature.

At the present point in time the settlement itself is to chaotic to be regarded as a unified entity. It's hoped that in the first or second decade of the new century a more centralised and unified society can coalesce and allow the tranisition to occur seamlessly.
