Cartography Bureau aka the Cartorgraphers

The Cartography Bureau (aka the Cartographers) is an organisation operating under the aegis of the Farhome Settlement Council (FSC). Given that the focus of human settlement on Farhome is centred on the Pelagean Archipelago, a need for accurate maps, charts and other data is a must.

There are various key positions within the Bureau; these are:

  • Operator; responsible for operating the various drones available to the Bureau
  • Surveyor; takes measurements of various areas, specifically potential settlement sites
  • Scout; engages in physical exploration - usually of recently discovered islands or islands that have not been settled
  • Cartographer; creates maps based off relevant data gathered via operators, surveyors and scouts
  • Archivists; maintain the records of the bureau
  • Administrators; deals with the general public and other agencies as well as the day to day operation of the Bureau

Given their important role in helping the settlement grow the Cartographers are seen as something approaching hero status. Many a child often claims that when they grow up they want to join the Cartographers and chart a new future. It certainly goes to show what the Settlement Council's marketing section has been able to achieve.

Up until fairly recently Cartographer teams went unarmed, but after an incident between a team and some hither to unknown wildlife (of a predatory & vicious kind) teams are now mandated to carry firearms and several drones have been modified to provide aerial support if needed.

The Bureau has its headquarters in Freeport with subisidary facilities in Bleak Harbour and Port Tempest. There is also a training academy located on an island in the harbour region of Freeport, dubbed Map Maker's Keep. The Keep lives up to its name as it is potentially exposed to high winds and rising waves. Still with suitable tech and construction the Keep has stood in spite of storms.
