Major language groups and dialects
Ancient Lorétian - the language spoken by the settlers who lived in the area around the caves before Lorétius was founded.
Lorétian - the current language of Lorétius. Derived from Ancient Lorétian but through foreign influence has little in common with it anymore other than grammatically.
Arenthian (Language) - used as common language between merchants.
Culture and cultural heritage
The Lorétians worship two gods - Apros the Giver and Itithi the Taker. They are worshipped in multiple Temples throughout the city, but are widely viewed as influences more than anything with direct agency - omniscient but not omnipotent. Lorétians believe in reincarnation.
Common Dress code
All wear loose trousers and a tied shirt. This is necessary due to the necessity of climbing to get places in the city, with the looseness kept in order that nothing get trapped inside their clothing.
Art & Architecture
Houses are made of stone and wood, though they are small as much of the community's supplies and dinner is shared, with daily feasts served in communal areas.
Birth & Baptismal Rites
The child is passed around the leader of each Temple to Apros the Giver, and each gives their blessing to the child. If any one denies the child this blessing, the child is unwelcome in their Temple for the rest of their lives. This is rare but not unheard of, and usually occurs if an insult or crime is perceived to have taken place by a parent during the pregnancy.
Funerary and Memorial customs
At a funeral, two leaders of the Temples of Itithi the Taker stant on either side of the dead body and bless the body to be taken to Itithi's benevolence. The body is then burnt. If no body is found, an important material good of that person is blessed and burnt in their stead, though they are said to wander in a type of limbo rather than return to Itithi's side.
Only those who return to Itithi can be given over to Athos to be reincarnated.
Historical figures
Queen Ita XIV - current queen of Lorétius.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
The Lorétian people idealise draping and clinging robes - climbing and working in the caves means shorted and more practical clothes are usually worn, but on special occasions this type of clothing is brought out. Short hair is the norm, and those with large eyes are seen as blessed.
