the Pick
The Pick is a small drinking hall in the mining village of Ilinvur, standing at the crossroads between the Ilinvur Trail, the Way of the Powrie, and Garumn's Climb. Built like a longhouse, the tavern has a single bar and stockroom, but it also sports a vegetable garden, and there is a gambling hall in the building's basement.
Purpose / Function
The tavern is the main community building of the mining village, serving as a place where miners can take off their hats and gloves and sit down for a cold brew and a hot stew after a long day in the pits. It also serves as a place of celebration, as many villagers treat the town to a cask of ale for birthdays, weddings, funerals, and other family gatherings.
Architecture
The building has a stone base layered with wooden plank walls, and stands a little lower than the main type of house in Ilinvur at a single story high. Its triangle roof serves as a storage facility for the drinks and dry ingredients and is supported by many tall beams that run the length of the tavern. A single, undecorated bar with stains of many mugs stands in the center of the far wall, with a small door leading to a kitchenette behind it. Small tables and stools stand scattered around the hall, and the outside light shines playfully through glass windows.
The basement of the tavern sports a small private office with an attached study, but the main feature is a gambling hall that follows the contours of the main floor. This game room is supported by vaulted woorden ceilings that rest on a stone foundation, and the floors are covered in a decorative carpet. Card tables large and small fill the room, and there is a small token exchange booth at the entrance.
A fenced vegetable garden decorates the backside of the building, with direct access to the tavern's kitchenette through the backdoor. Patches of gourds, pumpkins, leeks, and onions are interspersed with racks of cucumbers, courgettes, and tomatoes.
