Eilistraee

Eilistraee is a member of the Dark Seldarine and goddess of freedom, moonlight, and song. She is the one member of her pantheon in opposition to Lolth, and is considered to be an enemy of all Lolthite drow. She often tempts drow with freedom from the strict society of the Lolthite priestesses, promising them redemption and a new life of freedom.

Personal history

Eilistraee was created from the blood of Corellon Larethian spilled by Gruumsh in their first battle, like the other primal elves. When they were noticed by Corellon, Eilistraee was one of those selected to become deities with his blessing. However, she came to follow her fellow goddess, Lolth, in her teachings of communal power over individual freedom.

During Lolth's debate with Corellon, Elistraee did nothing as Lolth attempted to murder Corellon. Due to this, she was associated with the rest of the followers of Lolth, and departed with her. However, at some point, Eilistraee and Lolth, despite both being members of the Dark Seldarine, became bitter enemies. Eventually, Eilistraee became an ally of Corellon and the Seldarine, albeit an uneasy one.

During the Time of Troubles, Eilistraee was brought to Toril as a mortal like the rest of the gods. She manifested in the High Forest, helping drow refugees escape their Lolthite society. Following the end of the Time of Troubles and the weakening of laws caused by the shattering of the Tablets of Fate, Eilistraee was able to move her divine realm and the souls of her followers either close to or inside of Arvandor.

During the 1370s DR, the conflict between Lolth and Eilistraee reached its highest point. Their mortal followers, chosen, and extraplanar allies all fought in their names, but in 1379 DR, Eilistraee was tricked and killed. During her century-long absence, her followers diminished in number, but despite the best efforts of the followers of Lolth, were never eradicated entirely. Eilistraee herself returned during the Second Sundering, and quickly rebuilt her following among the drow that rejected Lolth.
