Waterdeep City Guard

When a situation is too difficult for the City Watch the guard is called. Created out of Open Lord Ahghairon's army the Waterdeep City Guard is the heavy response force of the City of Splendors . Armed with heavy armor elite training and three centuries of history the guard is ready to tackle the worst Waterdeep can throw at them.

They protect the city itself and the sounding area. Small towns who are under the banner of Waterdeep, such as Amphail, have City Guards stationed within their borders. Why they don't have members of the City Watch is because they, the Watch, are a peace keeping force trained and expected to deal with situations in a renaissance era metropolitan city not a farming town. The Guard is more adaptable to uncommon and downright bizarre situations. A watchman is good at stopping a brawl over three dragon poker not a rampaging owlbear.

The Guard like the Watch has its own rank structure. The basic unit is a patrol, usually consist of twelve guards, with the leader of a patrol holding the rank of civilar along with their own rank. In ascending order are the ranks of the guard: the rank guardsman is referred to as a trustie, then comes armar or sargent, shieldlar which is equivalent to lieutenant, aumarr which means captian, and the Warden of Waterdeep commanding all of them. So a patrol consists of ten trusties one armar and one civilar. Confused? Good, the ranks were made intentionally confusing.

The purposes for this mess of a naming scheme is to muddle the interpretation of dispatch by the enemy. This is why the ranks of armar and armarr are almost identical when said, only being distinguishable by the length that you hold the long R sound. Some special less confusingly named ranks exist as well such as Seneschal of Castle Waterdeep, Defender of the Harbor, Master of the North Towers, and Master of the South Towers. As well as temporary war time ranks like the Lords' Hand and Lords' Champion.

In a less confusing section is the equipment of the Guard. They wear a uniform of polished chainmail, with plates added over if necessary, and a tabard of black cloth with gold trim. Cloaks are worn during rain and snow. The civilar wears a yellow half cape, eblasond with the symobl of Waterdeep, that extends down to their elbow and is fitted to be removed quickly in combat. There is no difference between the uniforms of a civilar based on their rank, the idea is to stop the kidnaping of high ranking officers by making it a gamble on whether or not they are a high ranking officer. The Guard uses similar magic items to the Watch. Amulets of the Guard and Badges of the Guard are used, for the later shieldlar and higher wear them.
Notable Guardsman/woman
>The current Warden of Waterdeep is Elminster (yes that one) he took over after the unfortunate death of previous Warden Torrelnil Ironfoot who died to her own Delayed Blast Fireball. This is only temporarily until a suitable replacement is found, interestingly this is the sixth time he has had to do this. He also acts as a consultent for the Watch.
>Lokar Windrider the Lord Dragoon of the Griffon Cavalry. A experienced gnome who is a expert at directing aerial combat.
>Grimthar Susana leader of Special Reconnaissance a sun elf with a long life worth of experience in intrigue.

>Griffon Cavalry: for when things get really out of hand the cavalry is deployed, from the sky! Created to fill the problem of charging cavalry through a crowded city. The Griffon Cavalry is a elite and sparingly used unit. The noble sons, and some daughters, of Waterhaven with military ambitions get their start in the Griffon Cavalry.
>Special Reconnaissance: the spy department of the Guard and by extension Waterdeep. They do many clandestine and secret missions. From assassinations to kidnappings SR does it all. The existence of SR is a known secret, in that everyone knows it exists but no one acknowledges it.
"Now these are the big boys. Just look at that confirmed kill rate wonderful!!"
