Maragarth

Overlooking The Shambling Plains to the south, the silversheen lake to the west and the Aul'Daran river to the east, Maragarth was once a city rivaling any in the north. Never a beautiful city, Maragarth is a chaotic fusion of ancient mudbrick, desert-inspired dwellings and more modern Tudor-style constructions. This hodgepodge of architecture gives the city a slapdash appearance—yet there's a strange allure in its mismatched charm.  During the Pale Wars, Maragarth was among the hardest hit—not by plague, but by invading forces. In a desperate attempt to defend the city, a coalition of mages and druids enacted a powerful ritual, hoping to replicate the anti-devil shield that protects the Free City of Kintaro. Though the ritual was partially successful, the barrier came with an unforeseen consequence: rather than keeping devils out, it trapped them within. The magical shield now stretches from the city’s inner walls to its outer limits, creating a dangerous prison. Only a few narrow corridors remain safe for passage—leading east, west, and north along the old roads.

Demographics

Maragarth has a high percentage of infernal blooded people, more than most settlements outside of the Shekiac Empire. The cities central location and devil barrier mean a high number of crusaders also make their home within its walls.

Districts

Maragarth was once made up of 7 districts, the three central districts and the 4 outer ones. The four outer districts are now a devil infested ruin with only the ancient mudbrick building surviving, the inner three districts have morphed from their origional purposes and now the temple district is still home the the cities temples but also many traveller services such as inns, taverns and barracks. the High district once home to the nobility now includes most non trade housing, and finally the markets, although the have not changed much the now include many lower class houses made in a rough multi-level tutor style.

Guilds and Factions

The Aul'Daran Rangers home base is located in the eastern fort outside town and both the Crowns Guard and the Dawnbreakers maintain barracks and serve as town guard and protectors, the Nights Hand are active in town although their pressence is small and a number of crusader knightly orders call Maragarth home for short times.

The architecture in Maragarth is a unique blend of old and new, most building have a mudbrick base and even second story, remnent of the empire of the sands, built on this is the tutor style of building making up the upper levels of the building or even just a steepled roof.
