Tharivol Dalanthanis

Second Mate of the Sundancer (a.k.a. Saltwhisper)

Tharivol Dalanthanis was born as storm and sea collided. His first breath drawn amid the chaos of a monsoon battering The Virelion’s Grace, a merchant galleon caught off the coast of Brokenbank.

His mother, Saerel, was a tide-seer of Vesrah, a Moon Elf whose songs could still the waves and who claimed to hear the sea’s memory in her dreams. His father, Kaelen, was a Wood Elf wanderer and gambler who was never quite able to outrun his debts or his past, and disappeared shortly before Tharivol's eighth birthday.

Raised on ship decks, in salt-slicked alleyways, and in the scattered fishing villages of the Menagerie Coast, Tharivol learned early to live by tide and tempo. Saerel taught him the old songs - melodies woven with reverence and warning - while Kaelen, when he lingered long enough, taught him dice tricks and knifeplay. But both the sea and fate are creatures of appetite, and when Tharivol was only fourteen, Saerel walked into the ocean off Palma Flora with an enchanted conch in hand… and never returned. Some say she drowned, taken by the tide she revered. Tharivol never believed it. He still carries her crimson sash, waiting for the waves to return what they borrowed.

Life orphaned him, but Tharivol adapted. In the wharves of Nicodranas, he honed a rogue’s smile and a cutpurse’s reflexes. He joined the Shadowcoil Corsairs in his youth - pirates and thrill-chasers who valued daring over discipline. Tharivol found belonging among them, but even in that life, he kept a code: never steal from those lost at sea, never betray a crewmate, and never kill for coin. That honor cost him dearly. When the Corsairs attacked a helpless medical barge, Tharivol turned on them and fled.

It was during his escape that his stolen cutter was shattered by a deep-sea leviathan. He should have drowned beneath miles of dark water, but fate intervened. A patrol of Vesrah Sea Elves found him and brought him to the enclave’s depths, broken and dying. There, Princess Marilnath Cirelen replaced his ruined eye with a silvered relic of her people: an ancient artifact said to glimpse “the currents of choice.” He awoke with sight not quite his own, seeing movement where none existed, and whispers of futures not yet chosen. He left Vesrah indebted… and heartsore. Whatever passed between him and Marilnath remains his secret, but it was love, or something perilously close.

Eventually, Tharivol found haven aboard the Sundancer, a coastal trading galley owned and run by Captain Solaris - a stern but just sailor with no tolerance for cruelty or corruption. They met in a tavern brawl, and after Tharivol helped the captain fend off a rigged game’s sore losers, he was offered a position aboard the vessel. Over the years, he rose to Second Mate, beloved by the crew for his charm, daring, and uncanny knack for navigating both fog and fortune.

To many, Tharivol is a lively soul - quick with a jest, quicker with a blade, and as comfortable wooing tavernfolk as he is vaulting from mast to mast. But those who know him see the deeper current beneath his grin. He often stares out to sea, whispering as if in conversation with the tide. Some say he speaks to his lost mother, others that the silver eye shows him visions he can’t forget. Fewer still know of the Corsairs who still hunt him, or of the dream-songs that call him to places no sailor dares go.
