WTF is a hypotenuse and how do I find it?

Wednesday evening

Phone Call

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

On his kitchen bench there was the homework that has been piling up scattered across it. For the past half an hour to an hour he’d been slamming his head against the wall, fridge or whatever nearby surface before he looked down and a bright idea came to his mind. Call someone smarter!   So he reached down and called Yūki awaiting for her to pick up as she is on loudspeaker and he karate chops off the lid of some juice and chugged it down until she picked up. “C’mon. Someone needs to explain what a hypotenuse is and if it relates to photosynthesis….did I mix up my homework papers again?”

As the customer situation wasn't particularly hectic, Yūki had seized the opportunity to sneak off for a little break in her room. It was within her workplace rights anyway, probably. And it was pretty helpful being part of the owner's family as well as someone whose compliance they very much wanted to maintain for shadier purposes.   Once she was done with a few stretches, she noticed her phone rumbling on her bed where she'd tossed it a moment ago, and went to pick it up. A call from Aloy? What does he want? "What's up?" She asked simply as she answered the call, mostly interested in finding out what he'd actually decided was worth contacting her for.

Aloy put down the several gallons of juicer hat he was chugging in and looked to his current maths question. “What the flying fuck is a hypotenuse? And how do I find it?”

"Uh, it's the longest side of a- Wait, what the fuck? Did you seriously just call me over something you could've just looked up?" ...I don't what I expected but this definitely wasn't it. While she didn't exactly sound upset, an explanation was clearly in order.  

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

“No, I was gonna call you anyway and thought I might as well y’know ask while I’m here. Seriously though it’s the longest side of a….?”   He looked down at the paper and sighed shaking his head. “A triangle, so I’ll just circle the longest side I’ve got too much work to catch up on to actually figure it out. I was also gonna ask if you’re free tomorrow or are ya slaving away in the companies name?”

"Yeah, but only if it's a right-angled one. Someone's busy with summer school, huh?" She quickly thought over the suggestion and her own schedule. "I should have some time to spare at least, why? You looking for a tutor or something?"  

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

“Just wandering if you wanted to do like a study session or something at the library, bring some snacks and stuff….also I’m less likely to send my head through a wall with someone around “ he chuckled and shrugged sipping his juice.   “Yeah I’ve uh been doing he homework but honestly I’ve been passed out in class so I have no clue what’s going on, except for shop I’m ahead for that.”

...Yep, definitely an airhead. I wonder why he's asking me, though? "Sounds fine by me, I guess I could use a bit of rehearsal before my schedule gets crazy again. What time of day are we talking about?"  

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

“Uhhh I dunno how about like before lunch maybe like 10-11 in the morning? How’s that sound?” Aloy had in fact called for something that he could have easily google searched. Admittedly he just wanted an excuse to talk to someone besides himself or a vigilante at night. “We’ve find a cozy study room and stuff. If you want, I don’t mind if you don’t want to.”

Does he mean more than he's saying or is he just seriously always this awkward? "Yeah, morning's definitely fine. Doubt we'll have any emergencies on a regular Thursday anyway." She wasn't quite sure what particular reason either of them had to meet each other specifically, but since he'd seemed happy with it the previous day, she saw no harm with it. The idea didn't seem useless, and watching him was entertaining enough.

Can’t study if you ain’t comfy it gets really annoying. “Yeah? Well I guess I’ll seen you there then. Just bring lime homework and stuff, wanna meet there is you need a ride?” He kept circling all the hypotenuses for the questions that asked him to find the side. It was pure sarcasm to remind him later before he shuffles though paper and gets to work on something else.

"It's not that far from here, doesn't take much time for me to get there. Unless you want to make sure I'm not late?" She sat down as she tried to figure out if he really wasn't hiding any intentions. In the end she didn't really know him well enough to tell.  

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

“I don’t mind if you’re late or early or whatever just wanted to ask incase it was pretty far from you y’know? Like we were gonna go the same way anyway not like it’s a biggie to pick you up if you want or need one.” He shrugged still writing down problems chances are they were wrong, or he’d somehow gotten the right answer with a really stupid and wrong equation. He wanted to clear some up now so she wouldn’t think he was lazy and just didn’t do his homework. After all vigilantism makes it hard to keep up with schoolwork.   “So I’ll meet you there then?”

"You know where I live, it's not that far." She responded, slightly amused. Maybe it was best not to leave things up to his interpretation. "Alright, I'll try to be there around 10, give me a call if there's any change in plans. Got any other acute problems?"  

Aloysius ‘Aloy’ Fumi

“Huh acute….w….hmmm.” Is she calling me cute I should google this just incase.. He quickly grabbed his phone and googled the definition of Acute. Yep she wasn’t. Why did I even think that? Not like anyone would wanna say that to me anyway. “Uh nope. None at all, I’ll see you tomorrow then?”

Well that was a little abrupt. Knowing him, he's probably up to something weird again. "Uh, sure? Until then, I guess." While she might've sounded a little weirded out, that was nothing new and at least she'd still said yes.

“Yeah til then I gotta get back to my homework and stuff so I’ll uh see you.”

"Alright. So long, Aloy." Without any further warning she ended the call. Better not let anyone catch her wasting time like this, especially when it was something they'd be all too happy to misunderstand. Well, it seemed she'd have another chance to see if he was always as strange.

After the phone hung up he shook his head and sighed. “Get ready idiot you’ve got criminals to fight.”
