II.I - Into the Woodhurst Mines

The party has been tasked by Litton 'Slick' Wither to retrieve a rare ore known as Klatium from the mine in Woodhurst.

Exposition

Upon return to Woodhurst, the party will be informed that Klatium was only found in a now blocked passageway of the mine that goes deep underground and that there were some mysterious goings on and a few attacks claimed the lives of several minesmen.

Conflict

The party will be pointed toward Kam Sageflaw, the only person to return from that part of the mine alive. He has a hazy memory at best and can only offer minor information about what happened in the mine.   The main information that he will give them is:  
  • They were attacked out of nowhere
  • Directly after a loud noise from behind, he remembers fleeing and hearing a nasty inhuman sound thump up behind him and a sharp pain in his arm (which is now missing)
  • He woke up in a bloody pile of bodies and was able to make it back to town.
  • Once he returned the town sealed the tunnel

Rising Action

  • They may be advised to grab explosives from Rysa Kalysrii
  • They may be advised to grab explosives from Rysa Kalysrii
  • The party sets off to enter the mine.
  • They enter the mine and explore for a bit. They then find the sealed tunnel.
  • They break the seal and enter, and must locate some Klatium ore, and extract it.

Climax

During the exploration the party with have 3 encounters:  
  • 3d4+3 Piercers. The party with encounter a clearing with stalactites hanging from the ceiling over several empty mine carts that are thrown around the room. There are deep drag marks in the stone, leading further into the cave. When the party is in an optimal position, the piercers fall from the ceiling.
  • 1d4+1 Swarm(s) of Bats. These bats will attack at a random time throughout the cave where the party enters anywhere seemingly good for bats to congregate.
  • Umberhulk. The party will hear a deep tremor when they get near the domain of the umberhulk and it will emerge, prepared to defend its turf. When it hits <50% hp, it will burrow away, leaving in its tunnel that is full of 2d4 carrion crawlers. If the players remain, they can enter its tunnel to fight it in its lair.
 

Falling Action

  • The party defeats the enemies and finds the umberhulk's lair, which consists of its collection of gold and ores from sacked miners, carts, etc.
  • The party can find 5 large chunks of Klatium in this pile, amongst the other looted items. There is 250 gp in there as well, shiny weapons (common, pickaxes), and small trinkets.

Resolution

  • The party leaves the mine, finds Korvoc Cragjaw, who can smelt the ores for them, working overnight to finish it, or 2 days.
  • The party may also tell Kam Sageflaw about the experience.
  • The party returns the plating to Litton 'Slick' Wither.
