Millet & Grit Dodgers

"As one who has traveled much of Evermyst, I have seen these delicious morcels grace both the tables of Paupers and Kings and never grown tired of the taste of Millet & Grit Dodgers."

~ Adam Graymane, Tome Warden of Ibris

Millet and Grit Dodgers are small bite-sized cakes made of simple grains, usually wild wheat and ground corn, with a bit of salt, and some milk, butter, or lard to form a sort of batter that is cooked in hot oil. Batter is spooned into the hot oil, forming little golden ball-shaped cakes of bite-sized goodness.

Millet & Grit Dodgers are often made from leftover porridge to prevent souring and provide morsels to accompany soups or stews prepared later in the day. They serve as a simple grab-and-go food that can fill a belly and curb hunger. They can often be part of Travel rations along with some dried fruit or meat.

Millet and Grit Dodgers are commonly seen on supper tables, no matter where you travel in Evermyst. You will find them in any place where millet grain and corn are farmed. No matter the social standing in life, one will see a small bowl of these tasty little golden balls on any table because they keep and are ready to offer in a pinch to a hungry peasant, that unexpected guest, or visitor.

Millet and Grit Dodgers, or simply "Dodgers" as they are often called, can take on various added ingredients depending on where you travel in Evermyst. In the Norlandic regions, they might contain added flavors from Spruce Tips or Mugwort, while in the Plains Kigndoms of Rymar and Rivenar, you might see them flavored with sage or honey. Halflings and Elves have been known to add wild forest berries or currants. The Dwarves have been known to use goat's milk or even mead in the making of Dodgers. Every kingdom, region, or hamlet has its variation on the Millet and Grit Dodger.

Millet and Grit Dodgers are such a common sight on a home's dinner table that there are even a few catch phrases often used that mention them, such as;

" I will give you my last Dodger!" a term meaning they are giving you everything I have in or on me.

"Not even a Dodger," a term referring to someone as stingy or greedy, they can't even spare a Dodger to a beggar, someone in need.

"Down to the last Dodger..." is a term that can have a few meanings as answers to questions, like: "Did you take everything?" or "Did you search the house well?" Or meaning you are penniless, broke, or exhausted.

Millet and Grit Dodgers are a common and integral part of everyday life in Evermyst. They are gracing the tables of all stations in life, calming the tummies of hungry babes, serving as sustenance on long travels or hard days of labor. They even tickle the tongues of the social elite with added accents of salt, honey, and lavender as they sip a cup of tea.
