Cursed Beck & Mires

Along the southern shores of the continent of Elabor, there is an ancient swampland known as the Cursed Mires. Dead Brook River runs along the eastern border of the Cursed Mires to the sea, but before you reach it, the river forks. Trappers and Traders that traverse this river say, "Never to take the western fork!" better known as the Cursed Beck.

The Cursed Beck and Mires is a region long known to be haunted by Fae Spirits and Undead. It is said that these mires swallow up living souls and spit up undead that prowl among the mires and dark forested waterways. Legends talk of a Coven of hags that calls this territory their home. Travelers along the Dead Brook River heading south to the port of Edgegrave look for the ruins of Knaerwood Castle, and know to Veer left with their paddles to avoid being swept into the Cursed Beck and deep into the Mires.

Geography

The Cursed Beck is a small, fast-running water tributary that forks away from the Dead Brook River, losing much of its force within the first couple of miles. It then floods the whole area, creating the Cursed Mires. It eventually finds the sea, but only a couple of fortunate boat captains have been able to follow it through to the sea, all with harrowing tales to tell.

Localized Phenomena

The Cursed Beck and Mires year-round are plagued with mists. Most nights and early morning hours, this can even be dense fog. The Mist is so heavy that one's clothes are damp by the first day and soaked within 48 hours.

Winter and Fall months can be cold, with the mists adding to discomfort. Summers can be very humid and sticky, and when Insects such as Mosquitoes and Flies are at their worst.

The Mists are rumored to be disorienting, making travel in the mires uncertain and even confusing. Those few that have survived and successfully left the Cursed Mires say they felt exhausted and, for their time in the region, felt they were dream-like or a nightmarish state.
