The Binding of the Blooded
The Binding, as it most commonly known, is a Living Document carved directly into the Spear of Skaldor- the symbol of Imperial power. It defines the powers and limitations of the royal family, particularly the Emperor or Empress or whoever happens to claim those titles, as well as the powers and obligations of nobility under their rule. The most important rules are as follows:
- No member of the royal family may be resurrected via magic
- The Emperor of Evermore may never conscript soldiers from among the populations of those outside of whatever city in Evermore Proper happens to serve as the capital of the Empire at the time
- No spells may be laid upon the nobility of the realm, either by the royal family or servants thereof, that would influence the minds of the spell's target
- The Emperor shall never become immortal, nor shall they pick up one of the Thousand Blades, nor extend their lives via any sort of magic
- The heir to the Empire is to be the oldest child of the current Emperor. Should the heir pass before their royal parent, the status of heir shall be moved to the current Emperor's second-oldest child if applicable, or a sibling to the Emperor if not.
- Any Emperor under the age of fourteen years old is to be advised directly by the royal family. No lord shall attempt to influence the Emperor whilst they are a child.
- In the event the eldest child of the Emperor is a bastard, the Emperor has the right to instead pass the status of heir to either a sibling or their eldest trueborn child, but does not have the right to name a younger bastard heir.
- There must always be a Skalxien in the capital for fear of emergencies. The Emperor has the right to choose which of their family shall hold this office, and may freely change who that may be
- The Emperor shall always be a Human Being. Any half-Human bastard or trueborn child is not eligible for the throne. Instead, the Emperor reserves the right to name royal bastards of any race as a Ward of the Crown, and may put them in any other office of the Crown
- If the Emperor has no children, the heir shall be their eldest sibling, and so on down the line of siblings. Should no such sibling exist, a cousin may be chosen as the heir by special council of the royal family and only the Skalxien family. If the chosen heir is not a Skalxien, they may immediately be naturalized
- The Emperor has a duty to shelter and protect nobles sworn to them should they be driven from their lands
- The nobility, as individual provinces, may choose to war with a non-Imperial state if they so choose, but to do so is to forfeit the protection offered by the Crown
- The nobility in control of a province are required to provide taxes to the Crown in the form of currency and troops. They are allowed and encouraged to maintain their own militaries besides this, fully in their own command
