Confederate Dragoons
While the Confederate cavalry in general is widely considered to be the best on the continent, the mounted infantry known as dragoons have an especially fearsome reputation. They are one of only a few Confederate fighting forces to be made up of soldiers pulled from all Confederate holdings and walks of life, alongside the aeronautical services and Thunderhead Division. They are most frequently deployed as raiders and skirmishers, and in times of war with the Empire especially are used to swiftly reinforce both infantry ad cavalry. Dragoons are the Confederacy's foremost black powder unit. When paired with highly mobile artillery formations, the dragoons are referred to as flying artillery. They are part of the Confederate infantry and split into only companies and regiments.
Composition
Manpower
Dragoon companies are made up of 250 mounted infantry. A regiment is made up of five companies. Each company has around 60 additional support and supply personnel that are expected to simply catch up when they can. When companies are massed together as a regiment, the supply corps typically increases to as many as 90 support to 250 infantry. By Archon's decree, each company must include a battlemage, a support mage, and no less than five clerics in addition to a mundane surgeon with assistants.
Equipment
Each soldier carries a short musket designed for use from horseback as well as a traditional elven saber. Officers also trade the musket for four pistols and the saber for a full sized elven curve blade. These troops are lightly armored, only reinforced leather. Supply units carry additional powder and shot and lead spare horses. The mages assigned to a dragoon company are required to carry utility wands and are forbidden from using fire spells. Wealthier officers often invest in extradimensional spaces such as bags of holding to store powder in.
