Cormanthyr

Reminants of the Kalig Republic

After the assassinations of the twelve Dragon Kings, the Kalig Republic was left without rulers or direction. The collapse of the republic was inevitable. The rise of the first King, Lazarus, of the Imperium concluded the chapter in history that was the Kalig Republic. Seven Kingdoms rose from the fragments of Kalig but none lasted the onslaught of the Imperium. Without their land, their Dragon Kings, or their history the reminants of Kalig migrated eastward. Past the Wasteland, past the White Peaks, past the Tortured Lands, until they found it. The reminants had found the Moonsea, a place of green lands and an endless water supply. Upon the coast of the sea, the settlement of Hillsfar was founded.   These initial residents spread far and wide along the region now known as Cormanthyr. With the lost of history, the original traditions of the Kalig culture was lost through the generations as it was passed by word of mouth. Only one fragment of their original history remained from the Great Republic, the legend of the Dragon Kings. The true meaning behind the Kings were lost with time and a new meaning was formed due to the high frequency of Dragons in the Cormanthyr area. The former Kalig people believed themselves as destined by their gods to travel to Cormanthyr. Their gods would only allow mankind to destroy their lives for a greater purpose; The extermination and subjucation of all Dragon kind. A great crusade was set in stone for new "Dragon Kings" to be born in Draconic blood.

The Great Crusade

At the start of the year, 118 I.E. all Cormanthyrion adult males gathered to Hillsfar at the request of the High Chief. High Chief, Carlieon, advised by his Hofgothi declared to his people that the gods have willed it that the age of extinction has come for the dragons. The soldiers of Cormanthyr will be the harbingers of a new age where dragons are suppressed to legend or myth. "We will soon be walking into the grasp of death... The spark of life which burns inside you is flickering in this very moment. Many will die in this battle but more survive. So rage against your enemies! Rage! Against those who wish to exterminate your spark. Rage! Against Asmodeus' claws. They chase our armies but we do not fear forwhich we face flames which burn hotter than the hells. When you hear the thunder of wings rejoice for it is fortold that from the flames we will be born anew in dragons blood. The twelve Dragon Kings await our arrival!" -High Chief, Carlieon.   The Great Crusade concluded in the year, 202 I.E. after eighty-four years of fighting. Hundreds of thousands of causalities occured during this crusade and most of the dragon population died along with them.

Height of Power

With victory at the "battle of the Thunder Peaks", Cormanthyr had completed their draconic crusade. The Comranthyrion people had full control over dragons. Dragons were reduced to "extinction" according to the Cormanthyrion librarians with spottings of wild dragons occuring rarely. During this time, the foundation for the High Chief Palace and inner city of Hillsfar was replaced by the bones of Arstimas "The Dream Cremator", the last seen great dragon of the crusade. The High Chief title was renamed to "Dragon King" with the first "Dragon King" of Cormanthyr being the great-grandson of High Chief Carlieon, Daerimex. For the next 200 years, Cormanthyr's reign held strong and the dark age of dragons begun.   During this time, the Dragon King and Hofgothi had become evermore delusioned in the Kalig Republic's past. In the year 300 I.E., Dragon King Gaelieon, created a new order of Hofgothi hidden away from the main government. This order of Hofgothi was titled, "The Drekions". Members of the Drekions were selected based on their obsession with dragons even at a young age. The Dragon King and Drekions started experiments on dragons and humans. Dragon King Gaelion hoped to create successful dragon-human hybrids which he could eventually mix his own bloodline with to become what he believed the Dragon Kings of Kalig were. The experiments were initially unsuccessful for another 68 years until Dragon King Nistamer delusioned in his obsession sacrificed his daughter in a ritual to hatch five dragon eggs. These eggs were bronze, white, blue, gold, and red. Upon the completion of this ritual the first dragonborne people were created. The dragonborne people continued to be created via human sacrifices for 32 more years until the year, 400 I.E..

The Fall and Revolution

The dragonborne people were treated by the Cormanthyrions as slaves working in enslavement camps and would be executed for any small outlash. In the year 402 I.E., five dragonborne brothers managed to escape their slave encampment and traveled into the Cormanthor forest. The brothers traveled to the highest peak they could find in the forest, praying to the sky to whatever gods that would accept them. Praying for an end to their suffering, no matter the cost. The specific history of events which occured that day is lost to time but on that day the The Arch-Seven were first sighted in Evantris. The Arch-Seven burned Cormanthyr leaving only ruins across the region and then dissapeared across Evantris. Cormanthyr was left scattered and without leadership. The Dragon King was overthrown in a riot and the fall of his kingdom was inevitable.   The dragonborne people across all of Cormanthyr migrated along with the five brothers to Suzail forming Cormyr.

Present Day

In the year 762 I.E., Cormanthyr has gone away with the Dragon King title and dismanted the Drekion order. The High Chief title was reinstated and given to a noble family in Cormanthyr. The High Chiefdom now relies on a primogeniture inheiritance system. Any form of experimentation is forbidden in law and will be punished by death. Cormanthyr no longer obsesses with mastery over dragons but still treats dragons with great hostility. The great dragon hunts of old are no longer repeated as the generations continue to grow. The dragon population had grown immensly since the fall of power of Cormanthyr with great dragons reappearing to this day. It is said that the current population of dragons rival the dragon population of before the formation of Cormanthyr.
The city of Hillsfar is built from the bones of the great dragon, Arstimas "The Dream Cremator".
The Hofgothi
Hofgothi are spirtual advisors to the High Chief who can "see" into the will of their gods. The Hofgothi are a special class in Cormanthyrion social structure. When the Kalig people came to their new home, they designated any former priests as leaders this traditon eventually lead over time to the Hofgothi. The Hofgothi we know now all are descended from the original priests of the Kaligians. Due to this, the Hofgothi are breed for a singular purpose with each person in power being designated a Hofgothi for advisment.
