Smallfair
"The Smallfairese know how to party better than anyone. Just uh... Stay clear of the Giant Bees." - A Valur Coast tour guideThe quaint agricultural village of Smallfair is mainly focused on the taming and breeding of rare creatures, baking, and tailoring. The biggest focus of the town, however, is the year-long Prosperity Festival that attracts much tourism, funded by the mostly rich villagers.
Demographics
Elf (28%), Halfling (26%), Human (24%), Dwarf (13%), Gnome (5%), Half-Elf (3%), Other (1%)
Government
Baron Wyninn is solely responsible for the governance of the town but is heavily influenced by the merchants and other rich folk of the town. The biggest difference in law from the rest of the Empire is that interrupting the Prosperity Festival is met with death without trial. The people are taxed little, but most voluntarily donate to public works in the town, mainly improvements to the festival.
Defences
Severely lacking in defences, besides the odd guard here or there - usually drunk from the festival. The Protara Gulch can be used as a natural defence, as there is only one bridge across.
Industry & Trade
The biggest industries are revolving around exotic animals and baking, with a local tailoring industry and many sheep and goat herders and fishermen.
Infrastructure
A large crane built to lower people into the ravine for harvesting and collecting beasts. A well in the centre of town. A dock for fishing boats. A big dancefloor surrounding the well with a built in bandstand.
Assets
- The Bald Bluefin Inn and Tavern - 4 story building with 14 rooms. Run by a halfling wine mum named Val
- Harbald Supplies - supply shop run by Harbald Harbaal, the only half-orc in town who is also an accomplished tailor.
- Beard'n'Butter - Famous bakery run by Tarlatticus Morvon, who is famous for their 5-foot beard.
- Delia's Exotic Beasts - Delia Severett is the influential matron of the town, and holds sway over every creature salesman in town. Most come here to sell their beasts. Known for their Giant Bees, Mole-Lizards, and Aquatic Pixiebirds
Tourism
Smallfair actually gets quite a bit of tourism, partly to see and purchase rare exotic animals but mostly to attend the world's longest running party. The Smallfair Prosperity Festival has been going for hundreds of years, and was only interrupted twice and each time the perpetrator was executed the same night. The festival is known for its' unique dances, 8 hour happy hour, raucous music and bright lights. The festival goes throughout the day, in the form of a musically backed farmers market popular amongst tourists.
Architecture
Strung between every building are stained-glass lanterns, which are lit every night to produce colourful lighting for the festival. The roofs of the buildings are mostly flat with pagodas on top for an excellent view of the festival.
Geography
Smallfair lies next to a moderately sized ravine called Protara Gulch, inhabited by many strange exotic creatures. Smallfair lies on the Valur Coast and is surrounded by moderately hilly area.
Natural Resources
The Protara Gulch gives the village access to some of the world's rarest creatures that for some reason live solely in the ravine. This gives them monopoly over the trade of these creatures, and makes the village a rich one. The town is hilly and grassy, so the herding of sheep and goats are quite a prosperous business, and their wool makes for good knitting and tailoring. They eat fried octopus which they fish across the coast and enjoy a mead made from the honey of Protara Bees.
