Tessa Briggs

Tessa grew up as a street urchin around the docks of Bluepoint, always hanging around the sailors and attempting to stow away on ships. One day, a curious boy showed up in town and introduced himself as Olian Trost. He was a mischievous young human with red hair and a lopsided grin. The two of them became fast friends, constantly getting in trouble together from stealing from stalls, antagonizing townsfolk, and sneaking aboard ships. The two of them discussed at length their desires to sail the seas and search for treasure.   A few years went by and Olian became a young man. While Tessa aged alongside him, she never grew any taller, and was constantly overlooked by others. At this time, Olian was hired by a merchant crew and set sail. It would be many years before Tessa saw him again. In the meantime, Tessa taught herself how to fight. She eventually took small jobs with the Black Eye Thieves' Guild running jobs that required her to sneak in and out of locations without being noticed, easy for someone of her stature. Eventually, she decided that skulduggery wasn't for her, and she joined up with a band of seafaring mercenaries whom she had heard about through her Black Eye connections. They accepted her without question, given her prior experience, and she was able to sail the seas once more.   Years later, she had worked her way up to First Mate on The Amber Dawn, and was sailing an interception mission to locate a ship called Crimson Sky and relieve its captain, known only as Red Grin of a certain treasure. Tessa had no idea where the captain picked up the job, but it wasn't her place to question. When the Dawn eventually located the Sky, a battle ensued. When Tessa boarded the Sky to search for the treasure, she scampered belowdecks and came face to face with Red Grin himself, who she immediately recognized as Olian. The two locked swords, but Tessa was defeated. Olian, who now bore a ghastly red scar up the side of his cheek, had turned cruel after his years at sea, and took Tessa captive. He went on about Unity and Azagog, saying he had received their blessing. The Dawn's captain heroically attempted to rescue Tessa, and succeeded, but lost his life to Olian in the process.   Retreating from the battle, Tessa was now the new captain of the Dawn, though she had a lot to prove to the crew. While they respected her from her time as the first mate, many harbored bitterness about the former captain dying to save her.   In order to get to the bottom of what happened to Olian as well as regain face with her crew, she set sail for Guardia to learn more about the Church of Azagog in Aegis City.
